View Full Version : How about user defined global presets?

As in, the ability to dial in your performance settings for a particular type of flight and make a "preset" out of it?
To elaborate from my own perspective - I have a "preflight" ritual that consists of dialing the sim in for my system and the flight conditions.
Night flight? Terrain mesh complexity goes way way down. Extended terrain textures get disabled. It gets way deeper than that...
Low and slow? Autogen goes up...
High and fast? Autogen goes down...
Mostly above clouds? A LOT of settings go down then lol...
Having some user defined "presets" for settings would sure be nice for changing things on the fly - pun not intended lol...

AHAH! So it was you that send the email to tell_fs! Well, here's the reply I sent you so everyone can see:
Here's a tip for you. After you've set the sliders the way you want, quit FS and save a copy of FS9.CFG with a different name. You can then launch FS using a command line switch (/CFG: ) to use the settings specified in that file. For example:
FS9.EXE /CFG:"C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9\My Custom Settings.CFG"
Note that you have to include the full path to the CFG file (in quotes if there are spaces in the path).
Once you have a bunch of different .CFG files you can create Windows shortcuts to launch them. Then to switch settings all you have to do is quit FS and re-launch using a new set of settings.

Sounds fun, except the quitting part. If we're flying high and fast it's cool, but a desecent into a major metropolitan area would call for more autogen and scenery detail (and maybe less clouds hehe). It might get annoying to save the flight, then reload FS :) IMHO

Hey, that's a nice tip, Taildragger! I wrote a batch file for swapping configs (see my sig) but I agree with Ryan that it would be very nice to do this in mid-flight.
Along similar lines, I would like to have an option to save a config with a flight, that would override the global config. In the flight setup window, there would be a "Use Custom Config..." button that, when clicked, would allow you to change all sorts of settings-- display complexity, traffic, etc. These changes would apply to that flight only. I imagine this would require some major architecture changes tho...

Hmmm... There have been times when I wished FS could re-read the fs9.cfg file (after I made a change, of course) in flight, especially for certain things such as pan rate.
