Flattened roads were a great addition to FS2004. But there are times when it still leaves a lot of jaggies in the road (think rockslides, etc.), and it still climbs very steep hills that would be impossible for cars (and the same comments apply to railroad flattening). So besides side to side flattening, perhaps some amount of fore/aft flattening (length of the road) and leveling (much as construction crews do on real roads) could be added for the next FS version.
While on the subject of flattening, it's wonderful that we have improved resolution mesh (38m and better -- even 9m in a few areas), but that's still coarse enough to leave parts of some rivers with height variations. Perhaps on rivers with "splashable" water there could be a flattening mechanism similar to that for roads. Obviously this isn't needed for the "blue line" rivers, but could be an aid on the ones suitable for landing floatplanes.
Consider, too, the increasing tendency for add-on developers to create boats, cars, trucks, etc. for use in FS -- this flattening improvement could make those add-ons more useful, as well.
