LAST EDITED ON Dec-31-01 AT 11:29PM (EDT)[p]It's a nice night in Chi town! I hope this is O.K. I did it pretty quick. (I can send it to you - but not at that hotmail address - too big.)

By the by, are these guys still in business? Where do(did)they fly out of?

Bill!

Great paint job, and fast too! If you have some time on your hands, I sure wouldn't mind my own Virtual airline with a great DF B737 paintjob....(hint hint)

Pretty please?

Well, sure. I've seen those chrome jobs on your site - but I kinda' prefer the DC-3 scheme myself...sorta' retro. What did you have in mind?

I won't have quite as much time to work on them as I have had during the holidays, though. Gotta' pay some bills.

Hey, Andy, send me the email address again where I can send you a slightly "revised" template for Eastwind. I noticed I had left the top of the vertical stab white. Arrrgggg...I HATE it when that happens. :-)

Hi Bill,

how exactly do you do that repaint so fast? Cause I wanted to repaint some planes for my new VA coming soon and I was wondering how you do the Logos and Writing. Please help.

Looks pretty good to me. There's not much to choose between either one. (I think the "EASTWIND" text on yours has the more correct slants, actually.)

LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-02 AT 10:52PM (EDT)[p]Mostly I have Lou's template to thank for it. He has done most of the work. After that, it's just using the tools in your graphics program to the best advantage. (and some schemes lend themselves to faster turn-around than others)

Here's a screenshot to give you an idea how I work. There's a couple of reference shots in PSP at the bottom. I've taken the profile, cropped and blown it up to match the template. Then I plop it in the template at 40-50% transparency. Now, you've a pattern to follow - use the tools you have to duplicate the livery in the template. In this specfic case, the livery is so complex I chose to complete the major elements separately and then layer them in the template.

If you have a font that's close, you may be able to get away with using that and just touching it up. Otherwise, you'll have to build it from scratch with splines and/or fills. Small stuff you maybe able to lift from the actual example your using since the detail will not readily visible (Example: The samll tail logos in my example shot.)

Once you get the basic livery laid down, then you can dink with some shadow and highlight layers if you want.

Now, I've given away ALL my secrets. :-)

I'm pretty much looking for that kind of paint scheme for the DF B737, perhaps with a nice lady on the tail? I have a couple of images that would look rather nice. Send me an email and we can talk! -- RichmondAir@aol.com --

Hi Bill,
I understand kinda how you do the masking and stuff, but I still don't get how you "duplicate" the logos and lines on the side of the plane. Please help. (like what tools do I use?)

Actually, I took a look at the pokeman plane when you posted it the other day. I'm thinking of trying it, it's just going to take a little more time for my meager abilities. I've had to cut down on the computer time, since I've been flying the DF734 almost non-stop since I got it 1 1/2 weeks ago! My wife and kids are getting ticked off. The DF734 is fantastic. In fact, I finally took the plunge into Squawk Box and Roger Wilco, and fly it (and crash it) online now.

Anyway, I will try to get it done in the next week or so. As for the Eastwind, I used the graphics and text right of the airliners.net picture. Photoshop is a wonderful thing. I'm glad my work paid for it though.

You should reallyplay with the template provided by DF. It's ecellent. they have all the dirt, lines, shadows included in the PSD version as seperate layers (don't know about the bmp one). You just add new layers with your graphics on them, arrange them and/or merge them to put the lines and stuff on top, then save as a bmp. it's the best thing out there for doing liveries, and I hope they include it with the A340 and 727.

I believe there are some low cost shareware photo programs that will read Photoshop PSD out there. I definately don't recommend going out and paying an arm and a leg for it for just doing liveries. The LE version of photoshop is usually included in with some cameras and scanners etc, and it will work just fine.

Hope all thisa helps

I usually trace over the pattern that's sized and positioned appropriately. You can use polygons, Bezier curves, etc. to follow the pattern. You can get some logos from the internet. I may go to the airline website, the Boeing website, or others. Here's a good one for airline logos:
http://www.airodyssey.net/reference/logos.html

As Warren said, download Lou's psd template and Paint Shop Pro 7 (or others). Open it and get familar with the layers and tools. Practice on some simple liveries that just use straight lines and rectangular fills - then move up to the bezier curves, etc.
