Ok, here's some bad news folks.
The next version of X-plane will be 6.0! That's right, and there are only two reasons that I can see for that to be so. 1)
The next version uses a completely new engine, or (2) He doesn't want it to be a free upgrade since only vesions through 5.99 were promised to be free.
Alright now, how do I know that it will be 6.0? Simple. Go to the websight and look at the pretty screenshot of the next version. Now look up to the far right corner and you will see as plain as day....X-plane 6.0 beta, in red letters. Sorry to break the news but I felt since I noticed it yesterday out of the corner of my eye, that I would reluctantly pass it along.
I hope he realizes that the move that he is making will probably sink him due to the upcoming release of FS2002, which promises to be X-plane to the tenth power!
Good flying folks,
John

Well spotted. As you and no doubt many others will have realised the upgrade will be Version 6.0 We all hoped that further upgrades would be coming without having to dig deep into our pockets once again.
Like you I also believe that X-Plane will feel the pinch once FS2002 is released. The reviews that have been published promise to provide a sim that we could only dream about.
X-Plane for me has the BEST AERODYNAMICS in any current released sim, but to remain the best you have to give value for money. I believe Austin's decision to bring the X-Plane price in line with the competition was a very shrewd move, however having done that if he now releases a stand alone version so soon after encouraging new blood I feel what he has gained will be lost.
If on the other hand he decides to charge a NOMINAL FEE for current users as an add on to version 5.xx then all will not be lost. Time will tell.

I don`t care what it will cost! X-Plane is still one of the most
versital flight sims out. I have all of the flight sims including
Fly 2 and FS2000 pro and list goes on and on. I still plan on
buying FS2002 when its released this fall, There Train Sim is
great. I always come back to X-Plane though.

A new screenshot has been added to Austin's website that shows a bunch of houses. He is obviously going after fs2002's auto gen scenery powered monster head-on but I'm afraid that he will fall far short on the graphics front. But then again who bought X-plane for the graphics?
The main reason that we all bought X-plane is for the ultra realistic aerodynamics and flight models. What to do? Here's what I'm gonna' do! I'll buy Fs2002 first, give it a good once over and see if it lives up to the hype. I'm not one who always roots for the under dog and curses the giant monster. No I go with what is best! If Microsoft has lived up to thier claims then God bless them! If not, then, reluctantly I WILL purchase a new stand-alone X-plane at whatever the cost. I may curse the mighty Austin as I'm shelling out my cash, but in the end all I want is a good flight sim, and ethics or princible or whatever else you want to call it, will not stand in the way of me having the best virtual flight experience possible!
I also must apologise to Austin a bit for jumping the gun in assuming that we will be charged for the next version. We have no idea of his intentions thus far, and until we have an official statement everything is speculation and conjecture. Let's give him a chance to do the right thing!
Here's a suggestion Austin if you are listening. Release two versions in the stores. One as the full version and one as an "add-on" pack for owners of the previous versions. Make the add-on pack half price. Bing,Bang,Boom everybody's happy! You might even get some idiots who purchase The old version and then the add-on pack to save money...wouldn't that be funny?
Well that's all that I have. When all is said and done we all win this time. We have some great things coming at us shortly and the flight sim community is in for a great ride.
I am drueling in anticipation of the future software that is sure to be fantastic! Now if we can just get Looking Glass to rise from the ashes and give us Flight Unlimited IV the world would be a perfect place!
Good flying,
John

Well sorry to break the good news about the next version will be 6.0. It won't. Its going to be 5.70. I really don't think austin will jump from 5.66 to 6.0. And by the way I email austin and he responded and told me that the next version will be 5.70, with some other details thats not in www.X-plane.com/ Can't say what but the next version will be great. MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS. Thats the reason why the next version will be released sometime in september to early october. Don't want the surprise to be out yet. You all got to wait until then.

Beta Version is out. Check out www.xplane.org for more details. Too bad I couldn't try it put yet because its for macs only and i'm running PC Windows. I see that the new version in CD will cost $50 bucks and be released on Novemember. And what luck I was planning to get a new computer in that month.

I just went over to www.x-plane.com and it says plain as day right there that the next version will be 6.0. That's the official word from what I assume is Austin.

Let me start by saying that I am an advid MSFS junkie even have tthe train sim..........but I purchased X-plane 5.52 a whil back
and to tell you the truth,it is right up there with FS2000 and FS2002 Beta, except for the scenery.........Now I downloaded the version 6,0 Demo, and I cannot wait until it comes out, the scsnery is fantastic.........If you don't have the demo try it.
You actually see activities on the ground....such as cars moving along the street..........have a problem on the runway and there will be the emergency units with flashing lights ect......DOWNLOAD IT........You will only have 10 minutes of joystick control.
