I purchased X-Plane recently to compare it to FS2k. As everyone knows the frame rate and smoothness is so much better. I have a question - X-Plane looks very "gloomy" compared to FS2k which is bright and vibrant during the middle of the day. Is there a setting that I am missing somewhere? I have version 5.65 with an Athlon800 and a Viper770 TNT2 32MB video card

Your right, unless I'm also missing something, X-Plane is just very dark. If you have a difficult time with gamma try setting the month to something like July and the time of day to about 1:00 PM under the SETTINGS>>DATE AND TIME… menu option. This will adjust the location of the sun appropriately illuminating from above.

As far as vivid bright colors, unless painting the blue sky or a custom skin X-Plane simply doesn't have them. I would stop well short of referring to this as a frivolous feature too. Being able to determine the relationship between your craft and the objects around you is a fundamental aspect of flight.

Gloom and that itching feeling to hang yourself from the shower curtain bar aside, how do you feel about the way the aircraft in both Flight Simulator and X-Plane fly? I'm a helicopter sim junky but I've heard unkind words about the helos in FS, is it worth a try when FS2002 comes along?

I have not tried helicopters, there is not enough time to do everything! I prefer the flying in FS2k so far, since I have trouble with the trim in X-Plane on auto pilot, the plane seems to fly at 45 degrees with its tail dragging. I have a lot more trouble controllingthe plane in X-Plane. But of course X-Plane is many times smoother than FS2k which is a big plus.

I agree with you. If you want a brighter environment download my x-plane replacement textures from www.flightsim.com or www.x-plane.org

You can change the sky color and the environment brightness just by editing the skycolor_earth file in the /resources/skycolor/ folder of your x-plane system. Try my replacement texture files which you can download for www.flightsim.com or www.x-plane.org. You'll be surprised.

Hello ...
Will repeat what is already to be found here in the posts in this forum: http://www.x-plane.org Just click that link & check out the forums there as well as explore X-Plane's vast capabilities & downloads to improve your experience. Am new to X-Plane myself & it is very different from other simulations most of us are used to. Am recommending that you hang in there & begin to learn more about X-Plane. Perhaps the incredible physics-realism of X-Plane will hold your interest. Wish I could be of more help in this. Hopefully another helpful simmer will come along soon to assist.

you might find it useful to use the 'k' and 'l' keys to change time in the sim this may help you get a brighter scene.
