View Full Version : Current flight hop info
Hello Simmers,
Congratulations to Ollie (Captain Nuts) for finishing the current flight hop this morning.
I noticed there are several members flying the hop now and it would
be nice to hear how you are doing and how you like it.
I found this hop to be very challenging, but a great learning experience and lots of fun, especially when you can fly with someone.
I hope to see more names on the completed list soon....

Yes, challenging to say the least. As an Idaho native that has spent a lot of time in this area, I can appreciate the beauty and ruggedness of the area. I'm about 1/2 way through and have crashed more on these hops than I have in the last 2 years of flying elsewhere.
I should be finishing the hops off this weekend and hope to see some of you online.

Hi Smitty,
I will watching for you to finish. I've done the hop twice and am starting again. Maybe I can catch up to you...
I'd like to install the DeHavilland DHC6 you mentioned, but I have never installed any extra aircraft and I'm scared I will mess something up. I see there are a bunch of them available for download, here on FlightSim.com, but I bet they cost a small fortune to get.
Wishing you the best flying conditions during the rest of your hops.
Oh, almost forgot.....I flew several of the hops using real time weather and that seemed to work better for taking off. Landing, was another story, however!!!

Smitty,
Congratulations on finishing the current hop last night!

Anyone else have trouble getting past leg 8? I've flown it twice now, but the server won't give me the next hop. Any ideas?

I had the same problem. It wouldn't register that I had finished the hop. I drove all over the airport and it would register. You can get around this by typing ?hop=8 (or maybe 9, if that's the next hop) in the chat window. This will automatically set the hop number to the one you want.
Cool, thanks Smitty.
Now I know I'm not crazy... :)

Not sure what's going on, but I changed something in the hoplist. Would someone test it out by flying hops 7,8 and 9 and see if the problem is still there. Please report back here with details of the last successful airport, and what airport you are having the problem with or if the problem is fixed.
Thanks,
Mike

@ Smitty + Randy: Congratulations! :)
@ Roln: Congratulations for finishing the second round! Now try to fly it blindfolded. I'm sure you can do that. :D
@ Mike:
I flew successfully from 6 to 7. Then I flew Hop 8 twice and the server didn't recognize that both times. I also taxied around the whole place to find a trigger spot or something. Only when I slewed around a bit on the strip, it realized that I got to U54 illegally.
Oddly, the server shows "U54" in the "Near" column all the time
I remember Roln got stuck there once, too. He went back to ID67 (#7) and then it worked. When I flew the whole hop list, I accidentially landed on the other strip (oops) and hopped over to U54 and everything was fine. Now it seems it doesn't work anymore.
BTW, I wonder how to make a hop list?

9:00am UTC: Tried it once again... worked fine. Funny. This time I approached from the north, maybe this is the culprit?

Heh, Heh... Great hoplist! Flying the RealAir Skyhawk. I botched the approach on the first one (02ID) and stalled in a tight turn onto rwy heading, but since I had crashes off I managed to bounce back into the air pointing more or less at the runway so I just kept after it. I should have went back an re-flew that leg, but I decided to consider it a "warm up" flight.
I was ready for ya on the 2nd one and completely greased 'er on by overflying the arpt and dropping into the canyon a few miles beyond. Then I descended following the river which dumped me out perfectly on final for what may have been the active runway :) .
The 3rd one, well, I should have used a helo :) .
I am also an Idaho native and am loving this hoplist. How long will it be up? My only complaint is that my hometown airport (65S, Bonners Ferry) isn't on the list. That, and I'm gonna have to have someone haul some fuel in about the time I get to U72 :) .
Thanks,
Jim

Hi Mike,
I just finished flying from #6 to #7, #8 and #9....without any
problems. After landing at #9, the message popped up saying the
next hop is #10.
I believe it was hop #8 that I landed at the wrong airstrip 12ID, instead of U54, which happens to be located across a road and about a mile further. This happened to me the first time I flew the hops.
I believe this happened to one or two other pilots too. If I remember correctly, there is another place where it's easy to land at the wrong airstrip and therefore, the info on the next hop will not appear.
I'm going to fly this hop again, using a Piper Cherokee Six (PA-28)
which climbs a lot faster than the Cessna 172, I used before.

I know I landed at the correct airport. I wonder if the close proximity of the airports is the problem. Maybe it is registering you as being at one airport, when you're really at the other?

I flew the hop into the airport and landed from the south. The server did not give me the next hop message until I had slowed to taxi speed and taxied the whole length of the runway and then exited off to the left.
The only change I made to the hop was I changed the heading instruction by 1°. The original instruction said "Fly Heading 000 ..." and I changed it to say "Fly Heading 001..." I was suspecting that maybe the system was having trouble interpreting Heading 000 versus Heading 360. It was just a shot in the dark and I still don't know if that was the actual cause of the problem. But it appears to be working now.

Sorry to dredge up this old thread, but this new thread - http://www.flightsim.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=72058&mesg_id=72058&page= - in the Outer Marker forum shows some videos of landings at some of these airports. They are great to watch even if you didn't fly this hoplist.

Cool stuff! Thanks for the pointer, Jared! Didn't know that site as well, double-thanks!
Ollie
Hi Jared,
Sure glad you did revive this old thread. I, and others, had a lot of fun flying the Idaho hop and the videos proved how the terrain looks at most of the hop airports.
Thanks!
