Meigs Fly-In is 1700 - 2100 GMT (noon - 4:00 pm EST) THIS IS AN OPEN EVENT ----> To participate, simply fly to Meigs Field from your home airport or from any airport of your choosing. You should time your flight to arrive at or before 2100 GMT on March 12. Our ATC controllers will be in the tower on the day of the event. LiteATC will be in use requiring no complex SIDS or STARS. Simply follow the Controller’s instructions for altitude step down and approach vectors into Meigs.
Our main server will be used for the fly-in portion of the event. The IP is 82.152.234.89. The Teamspeak IP is 66.69.173.117:8768. Join the servers as you depart for Meigs. Contact Chicago Center on Teamspeak at least 100 NM from Chicago for altitude assignments and arrival information. Neither the FSHost server nor the Teamspeak server will require a password for today's event.
“March 31, 2003 — Sneaking in under the cover of darkness, city of Chicago demolition crews began tearing up the runway at Meigs Field at approximately 1:30 a.m. There was no advance warning, not even to the FAA. Some 16 aircraft were stranded on the field as bulldozers carved massive X’s into the runway pavement.”
It was a dark day in aviation history. Although many people fought hard to reopen the airport, it never happened, and today Meigs Field is Northerly Island, an undeveloped 75-acre grassy area on the shore of Lake Michigan.
But, like a ghost, the old Meigs Field still remains open, if you know how to get there. And that’s through the portal of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Meigs may be gone from the next edition as a default airport, so visit her often while you still can.
MEIGS FIELD FLY-IN
Our March Multiplayer Adventures event begins with an anniversary flight to Meigs Field. You can fly to Meigs from your home airport or from any airport of your choosing. You should time your flight to arrive at or before 2100 GMT on Sunday, March 12. Our ATC controllers will be in the tower on the day of the event and LiteATC will be in use requiring no complex SIDS or STARS. Contact Chicago Center on our Teamspeak server at least 100 miles from Chicago for altitude and initial approach vectors into Meigs Field.
Be sure crash detection is turned off before joining the session. (Select Aircraft/Realism Settings and then tic “Ignore Crashes and Damage”.)
COMMEMORATIVE AIR RACE
Once we arrive at Meigs, we invite you to participate in the planned air race. You do not have to participate in the air race to join this event.
The air race will be held high over the city of Chicago with participants flying through a series of hoops at different altitudes around the city. It’s a challenging course where control and planning are as important as speed. The pilot with the fastest time through the course wins a prize and a trophy.
To place the hoops into the default Chicago scenery, download “cgxrace2.zip” from the library of FlightSim.com. This is FS2000 scenery by Richard Hogen which still works well in FS2004. Only the blimp is missing at the start of the race course.
When you register for this event, you will receive a zip archive containing planning information in addition to that furnished with the download. It will also contain a start situation file set to place you in a default aircraft paused at the beginning of the course. You may substitute any aircraft of your choosing instead of the default one. Simply release the pause to run the course and land at Meigs Field. Sorry, please use fixed wing aircraft only - no helicopters.
