To tell you the truth, Andy, I have no idea where we're going :D :D - I hope this isn't going to be the case during the race (I **KNOW** it isn't going to be the case!) Reggie, any goal we should meet? I saw we started baton passing in 3 places, I'm not sure what this one is a continuation of. ;-)

What do you guys think about re-creating last years race as a practice run? (after we arrive for this run, that is)

John

When we get to HECA trying out John's alternate plan of last year's race might be a good practice

Great Practice - kept the baton moving across Europe from dusk to dawn

Forum UTC Times
1543-1707 - EGLC-LSZH - Andy - F-5E-2 Queenie (P-38) - 409.5 nm - 1:21:54 flight time - 1:22 baton time
1709-1808 - LSZH-LIRP - Ron - Starship - 240.4 nm - 00:54:40 flight time - 00:59 baton time
1810-1922 - LIRP-LIBR - Andy - Starship - 381.3 nm - 1:11:10 flight time - 1:12 baton time
1923-2034 - LIBR-LGAV - Ron - Starship - 324.2 nm - 1:09:46 flight time - 1:11 baton time
2035-2202 - LGAV-HEBA - Reggie - FSD Avanti - 507.7 nm - 1:25:45 flight time - 1:27 baton time
2205-2253 - HEBA-HECA - Andy - B-17 - 100.4 nm - 00:43:41 flight time - 00:48 baton time
2253-0006 - HECA-HESN - Ron - Starship - 376.9 nm - 01:11:39 flight time - 01:13 baton time
0009-0250 - HESN-HHAS - skyprince25 - Embraer 314 AFA - 623.9 nm - 02:32:42 flight time - 02:41 baton time
0251-0400 - HHAS-HAAB - apollosmith - P-38M - 378.7 nm - 01:05:31 flight time - 01:09 baton time
0509-0727 - HAAB-HKLO - skyprince25 - Starship - 400.1 nm - 02:12:46 flight time - 02:18 baton time
0912-0951 - HKLO-HK0C - John - P-38 - unsuccessful emergency landing due to fuel starvation
0958-1107 - HKLO-HTKJ - John - P-38 - 402.7nm - 01:08:23 flight time - 01:09 baton time

We kept the baton moving with only a couple moments break for over 12 hours - we got to Kilimanjaro in a total of 19 hrs 22 min.

We covered 4,146.0 nm with 14:51:27 hours of flight time - 15:29 hours baton time. We would have incurred 2 hrs 8 min of penalty time had this been the race - but had it been the race - the team and pilots would have landed earlier to avoid a penalty.

Some additional notes

EGLC-LSZH - also flying Reggie in FSD Avanti and Ron in Starship

LSZH-LIRP - also flying Reggie in FSD Avanti - intersting landing at LIRP - Ron with baton on Rwy 4R and Reggie on 22R landing at the same time

LIRP-LIBR - visibility getting bad - good missed approach and landing

LIBR-LGAV - Dusty joined us for a while - Reggie flying FSD Avanti along with Ron

LGAV-HEBA - too high on final - went around - almost lost it but made a safe landing

HEBA-HECA - decided to try a bit of classic flying - with Ron leading the way in the Starship - visibility beyond poor - almost non-existentant - Andy had to make a couple approaches in the B-17. Reggie joined in Vickers Vimy from HECW-HECA - skyprince joined and setup for next leg out of HESN

HECA-HESN - more folks joined in including Tony and Smitty

HESN-HHAS - skyprince25 first leg with baton - original destination was Z10Y as a challenge - but made decision to divert to HHAS (would have landed short at HPSN had this been a real race) Smitty flew DC-6 for the leg and Tony's FSD Cheyenne. Ron scouted the approach - Reggie flew Starship Z10Y to HHAS to also scout the approach. All landings manual on back course. Great smooth landing by skyprince25 - Mike and a couple others stopped by for a while then went to fly T-34's in Alaska

HHAS-HAAB - Smitty and Reggie flew along - winds were interesting to say the least - swirling constantly but on the nose most of the time - high airport - with mountains around - long fast descent to smooth ILS landings

HAAB-HKLO - most of the team had gone to bed - skyprince25 wanted to try out the Starship - ran a bit short on fuel and landed at HKLO on fumes

HKLO-HK0C - John had some trouble with first attempt - something about needing fuel - almost made emergency landing - but....

HKLO-HTKJ - John checked the fuel load and made a smooth safe flight - probably landed heavy

HTKJ-HTKJ - John took a tour around the mountain in the Ryan NYP

Great day's practice

Bound for HKML

Trims nicely - have to watch out for and go around some thunderstorms and lightning

Cruising at 7000 ft

Sky clearing as I get nearer to the coast - climbing to 10,000 ft

Getting dark in Kenya / Tanzania - also having some lightning and thunder in Dallas - hope my UPS works if my weather gets bad

Another thunderstorm in Kenya getting tossed around pretty badly

30 miles starting my descent from 10,000 to land at HKML

Not my greatest landing - tried Rwy 17 but crosswind too much - circled and landed on unlit Rwy 8

Climbing turn after takeoff at HTKJ - Must choose most favorable runway for winds in this aircraft - not the best one for the route.

Night coming to Kenya as I cross the last line of mountains before the coastal plains

Heading to Male on a test run with my P38 with external tanks topped off. Would the P38 make a wildcard plane? Best to test in practice :-)

Destination VRMM or bust (1695nm)

UTC 10:25

Status updates at: http://fsrtw.meine-sucht.ch/MapPath.aspx

Edit 11:20 UTC: 1400nm out, about 4hrs left, GS 350kts, headwind 21kts from 101, lunch is ordered and being delivered, ice cream container is on standby

12:49 UTC: halfway point, 850nm left, GS 365kts, wind 9kts from 048, currently at FL300, 136GPH fuel flow, 45" manifold pressure, manually leaned with help of ADFS, 2:23 time left to VRMM according to the GPS (4:50 total time would mean an avg GS of 350kts, not bad :-))

15:04 UTC: 55nm out, heading for a quick landing
15:15 UTC: baton is free in VRMM

21 gallons left in the tank + at least 5 in my bladder :D.
