View Full Version : •AROUND THE WORLD RACE PRACTICE IS JANUARY 8•

In anticipation of the upcoming Around the World Race, our January sanctioned event will be devoted to a first organized practice session. Additional practice sessions will be announced on this forum in the coming weeks. Our February sanctioned event will be the race itself on February 19.

On Sunday, January 8, 2006 at 1900 UTC (1400 EST) there will be an introductory practice session especially for new pilots and those curious about the event. All of our regular pilots are encouraged to attend as well. The official event from a first to second airport will last about 2 1/2 hours. The session will continue into the evening for those who wish to participate longer.

Reggie Fields, N927ME, will coordinate this session. Reggie will announce future practice session dates and times during this event and on this forum.

ABOUT THE RTW RACE

This is a relay - one pilot flies each leg carrying a virtual "baton". For the majority of the race, pilots will be limited to a maximum leg length of 800nm, and in 2005 there was a penalty for taking more than two hours to complete the flight. The race is for (1) helicopters, (2) piston engined aircraft, and (3) twin engined turboprops. These aircraft must be production aircraft - test planes like the Hughes Racer and the Lear Fan are not eligible.

The race is run in real-time, with the default MSFS Real World Weather. High realism settings and crash detection are required.

PREPARING FOR THE EVENT

This event requires that you have Flight Simulator 2004 or Flight Simulator 2002 installed and that you are experienced in the use of the program. Additionally, you should have the Teamspeak client and the RTW Duenna program installed as well. See the separate post for links.

For the first practice leg, the default Beech King Air 350 is the preferred aircraft, though you may use any aircraft you choose. The first leg will have a flight time of just under two hours in the King Air.

The real race requires that ONLY default FS2004 and FS2002 airports be used. Addon/new airports - even if they exist in the real world - cannot be used. If you have the great additional airports in China or Iceland or the Marshall Islands by Curt Jardey, Adrian Wright or DustEagle - they cannot be used during the race.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

This practice will focus on the mechanics of the race for new participants. There will be some experienced pilots particpating also.

The official event start airport will be announced on this forum less than 24 hours before the event starts.

The session will begin in local daylight - we will use the real world time of the local airport. The third or fourth airport landing for those who wish to particpate will be at twilight and at night - and progressivly more challenging.

PROBLEMS AND QUESTIONS

If you have problems installing any of the components or you have questions, simply post a message on the Multiplayer Adventures Forum and one of the team organizers will respond promptly.

EVENT SERVERS

The flight server IP for this event will be 82.152.234.89. The Teamspeak server will be 69.12.30.141. Backup servers will be in place should they be needed.

If you have a problem joining either server, come to the other one and announce the problem. Check in on the Flightsim.com Multiplayer Adventures forum for information on alternate server operations.

There will be an event organizer on the multiplayer flight server, with TeamSpeak available, from 1700-1900 UTC (1200-1400 EST) and from 2300-0200 (1600-1900 EST) on SATURDAY, Jan 7 before the event for anyone who has questions or would prefer to practice at that time.

EVENT REGISTRATION

An advance registration is NOT required to participate in this event. Simply join the servers and participate in the activity. There is no password required. Be sure to check the Multiplayer Adventures Forum for any last minute information or changes prior to the event.

The baton is coming down from the Russia / Alaska crossing.

Everyone should meet at Kamloops in Canada at 1900 UTC Sunday - 1400 EST. The weather may be a bit nasty.

The first leg will be to Glacier International and then to West Yellowstone. Both those airports have ILS landing systems which will probably be needed in the weather.

We will aim for two bonus airports after those - neither of which has an ILS - but the weather should be clearing as we go farther south, but it will be getting dark.

We might even be able to get the baton to Mexico tomorrow:

CYKA - est dep 1915
KFCA - est dep 2005
KWAY - est dep 2100

???

If we start too early, join in later - just like the real race - we want to keep going as long as we can.

We had a great practice today - stretching a little over seven hours as we crossed the United States from Canada to Mexico - through several interesting approaches, high altitude landings and some very rough weather.

Only one problem - some fool crashed on landing - this team should know better than to let him fly the baton.

But overall a great team practice.

The Baton time was 6 hr 43 min covering 1,707 nm from Kamloops, Canada to Monclova, Mexico in 6 hr 43 min - an average ground speed of 253.64 nm per hour. We had 6 hr 26 min of flight time - 17 min of down time - most of that as new pilots learned the post process.

(We did count the time of the crash leg - since everyone was setup for the final leg of the night)

We accomplished our two primary goals - familarizing new pilots, and old pilots, with the handoff and post process - and we had a lot of fun flying with friends.

We had two pilots take their first turn at the baton with nice landings by both in tricky conditions.

We executed a great missed approach at one airport where the weather was just too poor for landing and made an efficient - team work - landing at an alternate.

I counted seven pilots in the air at one time with about 13 pilots in all participating or stopping by to say hello.

We kept spotters ahead of the baton pilot feeding information about landing airports. We had standby pilots available and plenty of other help.

This is the teamwork which put Team FlightSim.com in position to win last year and we are well on our way defending our title this year.

We plan to have at least two additional organized practices in January - watch this forum for details.

Today's legs summary:

1924-2026 - Tony G - FSD Cheyenne - CYKA-KFCA - 280 nm - 1:00:23 flight time - 1:02 baton time

2026-2117 - N22CA - Andy - Beech Starship - KFCA-KWYS - 254 nm - 0:48:19 flight time - 0:51:00 baton time

2118-2251 - UK_RON - Beech Starship - KWYS-KLXV - divert to KGUC - 414 nm - 1:30:25 flight time - 1:33 baton time

2252-2359 - Tony G - FSD Cheyenne - KGUC-KSRR - 312 nm - 1:06:03 flight time - 1:07 baton time

2359-0049 - RFields - FSD Cheyenne - KSRR-KMRF - 201 nm - INVALID flight - crash on landing - 0:50 baton time

0056-0207 - Clarindo - Beech King Air - KMRF-MMMV - 246nm - 1:04:41 flight time - 1:11 baton time

Thanks for those words Reggie but I am sure I speak on behalf of the team when I say that without the organisation from your good self and Ed and all the other guys making ready their strategies for the race and to all those providing facilities to be able to do all this work none of us would be able to take part anyway.

This was only my second practice session, the first consisting of mainly good flights with lousy landings in the Beech KA350, and I swapped to the Starship with a better more useful panel and was able to post my first fully validated Duenna report which included that awful approach into the mists in the mountains and thanks to the Spotters on the ground and in the air around the area was able to successfully climb out and route to an alternate without losing a minute of flight time and that is the key to a successful RTW which I am sure has the exciting prospect of holding on to the trophy for 2006.

It has also given a whole pile of much needed information about flight sim I never knew existed and have been able to pass that info on to others equally surprised and delighted with all these "extras" that make flights and planning so much easier.

Great team, great organisation and with a little luck a successful team in 2006. Great to be a part of it and if I don't get to fly I will at least know I have in some small way contributed and will do so in the race period as a bringer of information so that those pilots only have to look out of the window and keep it out of the "red".
