Our July sanctioned multiplayer adventure begins at the Cradle of Naval Aviation at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. We will be flying military jets from the Pensacola NAS to the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier, located 35 NM off the east coast of Florida, near the city of Jacksonville.

This event requires that you have Flight Simulator 2004, FSNavigator, and Teamspeak client installed and that you are experienced in the use of all three programs.

SCENERY ADDITION

This event uses the default FS9 scenery plus one freeware add-on scenery.

Download and install “CARR2004B” scenery by Rich Hogen and Alejandro Villa from simviation.com. (http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/syb.cgi?section=scenery&file=CARR2004B.zip). Follow the instructions to add the scenery into FS9. This scenery adds eighteen aircraft carriers in various places around the world including the USS Kennedy.

Please note that the CARR2004B software was originally designed to complement a program by Rich Hogen called ArrestorCables, which has since been sold to Abacus and is now incorporated in their payware aircraft carrier software. If you have previously purchased a copy of their Flight Deck III program, then you have the cables and catapult already installed and they will work on the Kennedy. If not, simply download and install the aircraft and gauges described in the following section. When you complete the installation, you will have the necessary cables and catapult built into your aircraft file.

Be sure to rerun the FSNavigator data base so that the carriers will show up correctly in FSNav.

AIRCRAFT ADDITION

If you have the original ArrestorCables program or the one from Abacus, you are ready to fly any military jet in this event.

If not, download and install topgun01.zip and topgun1a.zip from www.flightsim.com. This is an F-14 jet fighter complete with gauges, effects and sounds and enables you to perform catapult takeoff's and cable trap landings on aircraft carriers without the arrestor cables program.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The event will begin promptly at 2000 GMT on July 10 at KNPA, Pensacola Naval Air Station. Please enter the session in a default aircraft away from the runways. Plan to arrive early so that everyone is present when we begin our departure.

Simplified ATC will be in use in Pensacola and on board the Kennedy. The controller will release each aircraft in succession in Pensacola, maintain in-flight separation among all participants, and control the landings on the carrier. Real weather updated every fifteen minutes will also be in use.

Please remember that the controller is very busy and concentrating on his work. Try to minimize side conversations with the controller and other pilots during departure and landing. We provide a Help channel and Cockpit Conversation channel on our Teamspeak server for such side conversations during this time. This rule is relaxed during the enroute flight.

During the event if you have difficulty communicating with ATC or following the ATC instructions, you have three options: (1) announce that you are going to the Help channel and someone will join you there to provide assistance, (2) ask the controller to vector you to an alternate airport, or (3) ask the controller for a holding pattern with a subsequent approach to the active runway. If you select option 3, the controller will land all other aircraft first and then clear you for visual landing.

Plan some scouting and practice time before the event. Landing on a carrier is a bit difficult, so spend some time in preparation. During the week before the event, you will find other pilots, who are registered for the event on our FSHost server, practicing their carrier takeoffs and landings. Join any of these impromptu sessions to get in some experience and learn some of the techniques from others.

EVENT REGISTRATION

An advance registration is required to participate in this event and participation is limited to twenty pilots. To register for this event, simply send an email to mp-registrations@flightsim.com. Your registration will be immediately confirmed and later reconfirmed the day before the event. The session password will be sent to you as part of the final confirmation packet. Both the FSHost server and the Teamspeak server will require the password for entry on the day of the event. Be sure to review your email and the Multiplayer Adventures forum for any last minute information or changes prior to the event.

Registration is required of all pilots so that we know that everyone has the registration packet materials in advance of the event. The cutoff for registration is 1200 GMT on the day before the event and no exceptions are made.

EVENT SERVERS

The flight server IP for this event will be 82.152.80.185. The TeamSpeak server will be 68.47.109.128. Backup servers will be in place should they be needed.

Be sure crash detection is turned off before joining the session. (Select Aircraft/Realism Settings and then tic “Ignore Crashes and Damage”.)

The servers will be online the day before the event from 2100 – 2300 GMT to provide an opportunity to test your connections prior to joining the event. Forum moderators will be online at that time to provide assistance, if needed.

Looking forward to seeing you in Pensacola on July 10.

I have down loaded the reccommended topgun F14 but the detail of how to take off is not sufficient. Can you submit full details of the assisted take off as the ACT doesn't work on my planes. The arming for the catapult works but there is no mention here about brakes. The other paragraph refering to manual take off does not get me claer of the deck probably because I am not facing a headwind of 30knots.Please give me full instructions for assisted take off as this is my preference.

NB I am looking forward to the event and off course practising.

Click activate, and when you're ready to go, release the brakes. It will launch you. You can change the speed at which you launch to anything from 0 - 995 knots. Best to have your engines already firing by the time you release the brakes.

Ideal sequence:
Activate
Throttle Up
Release brakes

Can you see me? Can you see me?

Looking forward to this event. Have the F14 and the carriers installed and have attended the FSHost server twice though I've done several hours 'training' hosting multiplayer with friends.

I have added to my panel the changes put together by Andy and have also added an ADF gauge so when in the circuit I can easily see eactly where the carrier is.

I've also added an autopilot so that some of the flight can be flown 'hands free' and in particular to control the airspeed more easily.
I have a battery of Go-Flight avionics so the autopilot is easy to operate and display.

The tail hook works a treat [even in cases where I've slipped off the deck and in effect 'landed' on the water].

My procedure for launch is:

1. set AP for 200 IAS and alt of 1000 feet and VSI of +1000 and hdg 192 [these settings are so that I can launch and go straight into a LH circuit]
2. ensure parking brakes are on
3. arm launch mechanism
4. full throttle
5. release brakes [which may have the same action as the ACT control for the catapault but have yet to test]

At this point I'm launched off the deck and I make a shallow climb, raise gear and switch on the AP which will then control the airpeed and climb rate.

As I have found when flying the Gloster Javelin, with an autopilot in the 2D cockpit I can manouvre quote close to other aircraft by making small heading, speed and IAS adjustments so that I formate smoothly with them.

It also enables me to get some great screen shots from the external view and to pay more attention to the FSNav display on my 2nd monitor.

Has anyone yet decided on the height and airspeed in the circuit for landing on CV67 near Jacksonville? I've been basing my practice on an airspeed of 200 knots for downwind, 170 knots turning base and 160 knots turning final. I deploy the tail hook on turning base and lower the gear and flaps when turning final.
When downwind I call 'abeam the boat' at the appropriate point and at 2 DME inbound I call "996 - flaps down, gear down, hook down - 996 has the ball!". [then I go and plough my $20M aircraft into the deck!]

I've also been operating on the basis of the circuit being 5 miles out from the carrier for downwind and 7 miles when turning final. Down't know if this is the norm or what.

I've still only managed one correct smotth landing to date so obviosuly am working hard to get more proficient. It is way different to flying my trusty DC3!

Does anyone get anything displayed differently when they select the CRT from the display menu? All that happens in my cockpit is the attitude indicator dissappears and is replaced by merely a black screen. What should I be seeing? Or does this only work in single play with a flight director giving instructions or the ILS?

Has anyone given any thought as to where we will stack all the aircraft as they gather on deck? Perhaps we should consider a priority parking system in place so that if we are say #3 for landing we will know exactly where to taxi to. Otherwise for those landing down the order the available space is going to be somewhat limited. My guess too is that we need a minimum of 3 mins between landings to ensure the deck is clear.

Do the wings fold on the F14? Haven't tried that yet but will check it out today. Obviously it is imperative everyone sets their aircraft realism to disable crash detection otherwise things will go awry.

If possible I'd like to be one of the earlier a/c to land so that I could position myself in a Bell 206 in front of the island close to where the aircraft would be landing to get some screen shots and video using FRAPS to send to the organisers.

Catch you all at training and if not see you on the 10th.

The topgun F-14 will crash FS2004 if you don't have the file gaugesound.dll in your main "Flight Simulator 9" folder. Unfortunately, that file was omitted from the topgun packages. Many people (everyone except me?!) already got this file when they installed other aircraft.

If you don't have gaugesound.dll, you can get it from the FlightSim.com file libraries by downloading stratexu.zip.

The edit voice pack file is there so it can be imported into FS with Edit Voice Pack and then ATC will call "Ghostrider" when flying single player. The file is not needed to fly the plane.
