Quite a few people, I know personally, are up for MP but too afraid to participate incase they do something wrong or interfere too much in the main events. There has to be others who feel the same.
A regular newbie event would help resolve this and also encourage new members to participate.
We are thinking of hosting an MP newbie session once every three months. Do you think this would be a good idea?

We definitely do need something like this. I know of many incidents on online games where newbies are abused or screamed at for making a mistake about some vague rule or procedure. Good on you!

Thanks for your input BG.

We are not in the business of screaming out at people when they mess up. We all began as newbies and we appreciate that the learning curve can be much steeper for some than others.
It's more about encouraging newbies to participate than flaming them when they mess up, however, you raised a good point and again we appreciate your input.

I'd say yes, but make it once a month or once every 2 weeks.

If we can get someone to do it more frequesnt then we will Kevin. At the moment we are looking at every 3 mths. Will see how popular the first one is.

I am a regular on the Flightsim.com MP server and can tell you that I have assisted many "newbies" with getting Teamspeak setup, answering hundreds of questions, making them feel comfortable on our site, etc. I have put together some information at my home page regarding FS Multiplayer for those new to multiplayer. The page summarizes guidelines of etiquette for multiplayer flying and events and is only written to make the events enjoyable for all participants. Much of this information has been collected from various flight simulator websites and continues to be a work in progress. I have attempted to put the best information available into one source to make multiplayer flight simulation more enjoyable.

My home page is http://home.houston.rr.com/maddatshell/ and click the FS Multiplayer Tips link in the left column. If you see me on the multiplayer server sometime, jump in and let's fly. When you connect to the server, just ask in the chat box if there is a teamspeak server up and one of us will give you the IP.

To All,

I too am a regular FlightSim.com MP server, both events and just casual, and have been since the onset. I just wanted to witness to what Mike has offered here to "newbies" or to anyone who has a question about the multi-player environment in general. Mike should be afforded some sort of compensation for all that he has done for the community. If you want some real help, level headed, even tempered, steady and sure instruction on any instance in flightsimulation multi-play, or just someone to pattern yourself after with respect to manners and sharing of information and ideas, there isn't another place or person that I have found anywhere on-line that is even close to Mike. Just slow down and read the second paragraph of his post above and think about it. What the heck else could anyone possibly need to "jump in and fly". You ARE the Man, ol' pal and this place is better for having you in it. Thank You for all that you've helped me with and all that you do for this wonderful FS world.

Best,

I'm reading your page now, Mike. At least then I won't do something dumb. Anyway, hope to see everyone tomorrow at 9PM (BST). See ya there, I'll be bringing some great aircraft along (including my personal Beechcraft Bonanza - made a repaint especially). Gotta brush up on my landing skills.

Will we be flying in to a certain airport? That would be fun.

Thank you for your comments Salt_Air. I remember the feeling I had as a "newbie" getting online for the first few times. Although I have been flight simming for many years, I still consider myself sort of a newbie when it comes to multiplayer. Fortunately, most of those people that I've met in multiplayer flight sim are friendly and helpful and taught me the ropes as well. We have a great group of pilots here encompassing all skill levels and as the saying goes..."the more, the merrier." We all continue to learn from each other.

Been watching this conversation with interest and feel it's time to step in and say a few words.

First off:
Newbie sessions will be just a random gathering of newbies and regulars for the benefit of sharing information and resolving issues on FS Multiplayer. No formalities, just a sort of 'how do I........' with maybe a short flight from A-B. This Sunday will be exactly that. In all cases, we will be using default aircraft to eliminate any issues with third party addons. This Sunday we will probably see a few on the server that have 'never' flown online before so for the benefit of those people we will be covering the basics without any complications.

Secondly:
We have quite a few old timers who are regularly on the server and willing to help out anyone with anything related to FS Multiplayer. Two of the top guys are right here in this thread. Anyone can fly on the server at anytime and 9 times out of 10 there will be someone on the server who can help you out. The server is only ever locked down on the day of a sanctioned event. Incidentally, before you connect, you can check who is on the server via FSHost Spy of by going directly to the following url: http://82.152.80.185:85

Lastly:
We (Ed and Myself) have been voluntarily running the forum and server for over 12 months now and pilots have come and gone but the regular group that exists today is a fine body of men who are very keen simmers and very helpful. Gonna take this opportunity to say thanks to all who have stuck with us and not only attended the events but also participated in the organising of events and other stuff. You guys are 'the bomb' as they say, and we really appreciate all the help you have provided in getting the Group to what it is today. We certainly wouldn't have stuck it out if it weren't for you guys. (You all know who you are)

Tip my hat to each and every one of you.

Well, let me just say, I can't wait for tonight... but if we're all using the default aircraft I better put my Bonanza on hold! Anyway, it's Mike Stone's freeware Bonanza I'm using with my own textures.

Just a heads up, I may only be able to make it at around 10/10.30PM tonight, as we're going to the cinema!! Actually, I may not be able to make it at all... hmm... what to do?

Not as many votes as expected but at least the voting is unanimous.
Closed this one chaps and thank you to all who voted. We will now be looking at the best way we can implement 'newbie' sessions.
