Winds 216@20 as we cross the Homer VOR. -23 up at 10,000 this morning, just some light cirrus to start and a beautiful dawn departure from Seward. Not that our mechanic would notice, he's tucked in between the tool rack and engine parts back there; for some reason he didn't appreciate the 0530 wake-up call - go figure! Had a great time wave running down Shelikof Strait and making a crosswind landing on the snow covered strip at Larsen.

I have control of the DC3 in PADU, heading to IKO. Boss, this one is tooo easy. You wouldn't believe the equipment these kids want to take....

John

Edit: Hey Boss, who had the plane last!? It wasn't filled up when I took off. It's NOT MY fault!! I just ran out of gas and I'm still 10nm out (but quite high). What's the glide ratio on this Machina? Visibility just droped to 2nm on the current weather report... Which part of the aircraft do you want in one piece?

This is a nice glider :)

Time on the DC-3: 21:48
Time to next service: 28:12

Boss, get those brakes fixed or make sure the next runway is longer :). Came in a bit fast, dropped the gears and full flaps, no go-around on this one (no fuel left).

Those students called the fuel tankers back in PADU for me on their cell-phones. Mine didn't couldn't connect back here, hey boss, we need more high-tech toys, ehm, tools!

Edit: the tanker just arrived and filled'er up to the rim.

Edit 2: A rich-looking couple just arrived. They're looking for something more out of the way for a couple of days to go bird-watching, fishing, hunting and kayaking (and the lady could use a good plastic surgeon, but I'm not gonna tell her that). I suggested the Pribilofs Islands, maybe St. George (hey, my guide book says: "St. George boasts a completely renovated 10 room Hotel with modern amenities..i.e..Dish network television, telephones in each room and no noisy tavern next door or anywhere." I don't like the ..no tavern .. anywhere, but BYOB).

So, who's up for the northern hop? Heading to PAPB St. George? It's a longer one, but well worth the trip (and man are these two putting down cash, expect a really nice tip if you land nicely, I got $400 just for packing the two kayaks :)).

Boss!!! Whoever you sent, never showed up!!! How are we supposed to keep the customers happy when nobody's here?!

They called me up at the hotel, I'll take them if nobody else will...

Let's see how the DC3 handles on its "autopilot" over the ocean, I'll get the two up to date on which birds to watch out for...

John

Edit: about 40 minutes out, the weather's getting worst all the time. Let's see if we can get down in PAPB or if we need to head to IPAU, just 10 minutes further on... The couple hasn't been talking about birds for a while, I think they have had enough of this flying business :) :)

Visibility 2.5nm :), lots of clouds, snow.

Somehow I think these two bird-watchers will be heading back sometime soon :) :)

Time this flight: 1:24
Time on the DC-3: 23:12
Time to next service: 26:48

The hotel has the other group of visiters already booked to head out Unalaska PADU to catch their flight back to Anchorage. How "Unalaska" can you get? I know one thing, it's not the south pacific!! After that we should start heading west again, what are we supposed to pick up in Adak?

Hi Johannes

When one of you reaches Adak you should find a set of keys in the kitchen drawer under the control tower. If you could bring back to me please when you get back to KSEA for the major service all will become clear ;-)

Cheers
Boss..... out

Well, what a summer it's been! I never knew we could have so much fun getting drunk in Alaska! And the girls....well, they sure keep you warm, that's for sure :)

Anyway, Boss just got hold of me and is extremely &#*@(! that the Gooney has been sitting at St. George all summer and fall not making any money for him. He doesn't care what the weather holds or how much fun we're having, he needs those keys from Adak and pronto! Another carrier was bringing some emergency parts that way for one of the crab boats out there and had to put down here at St. George due to a busted oil line. Boss arranged for them to be put on board and I'll be attempting a long run down to Adak in about 45 minutes or so...giving the mechs time to look her over real good and make sure she's up for it after sitting for so long.

Wish me luck! I'll report back when I'm off on the way...

Here's a look at the weather:

PAPB 12/1 10:53 AM VFR 10 1/2 sm Light Snow, Mist Few 800', Scattered 1500', Overcast 3400' 040 (NE) at 21 gusting to 28 kt 30.2°F 30.2°F 1.2°F 30.26" 100%

PADK 12/1 11:56 AM MVFR 4 sm Broken 1000', Overcast 1400' 130 (SE) at 4 kt 42.8°F 41.0°F 30.07" 93% 3-hour pressure trend steadily decreased 0.04" Hg

Oh boy - hope we don't twist 'er up...

We're on the way...had to take her slow through some rough wind all the way up to 13,000+ to find the tops! Still a little bouncy up here, but at least I can see something...

See you in Adak (I hope)...thanks for the well wishes John!

About 85 miles out and everything's pretty nominal...holding my breath.

I don't know what's scarier - the thought of making this approach and landing or the potential ire of Boss if I bend this thing... :)

We're down safe!

Had to make one go around due to being a little high on approach, but made it down with surprising ease.

Be back with the flight log and a few shots from the Polaroid - plus I gotta go find those keys!

Heh, when you didn't come back, I sold the business. I never did get that crate open, so when you get back you'll have to sweet talk the new owners and let me know what you find when you open it. ;-)

JohnMueller
12-02-2005, 08:49 AM
Ha! Well GOOD RIDDENCE!! THE PAY SUCKED! ;-)

Just checked in with the new owner, he's paying 50% more and guess what, we don't even need to do the maintenance ourselves. Actually, it was kinda strange, the new owner wasn't there, he just had a phone in the office with his number on it, so I called it. He told me to keep on flying that thing and just wire him whatever money is left after we deduct our pay from the flights. That's my kind of trust!

I picked up a russian girlie-band who want to Anchorage to play at some open-air concert. I wonder if they know where Anchorage is and what temperatures they have now? Oh well, not my problem, they're paying good!

Off we go. Haven't flown this plane in ages. I hope the mechs checked her through, I heard the last pilot really slammed her into the runway... :D

OOps forgot the slang: I have control of the DC3 at PADK, heading in direction of PADU. Airborne since 8 minutes, I don't know what the weather is like because I can't see it, someone must have left the covers on the windowshield because all I see outside is grey. And the aircraft can't seem to stay headed in the right direction, I have to fly really crooked to make the GPS happy. The girls in the back are singing acapella rock songs, almost feels like christmas :-)

Edit: 00:22 into flight: diverting to IKO, the girls took part of the fuel money and bought a few crates of vodka <sigh>. I'll tell the boss that PADK was closed due to weather :-).

JohnMueller
12-02-2005, 10:03 AM
Heading down to IKO, love the weather (winds aloft currently at 29kn/229 deg, on the ground at 12kn/90 deg.; visibility 8sm, clouds 7/8 from 540ft to 7320ft) - The girls fell asleep after too much vodka, that's probably better that way (in fact, I should probably get some as well, crashing sounds painful).

Update 15:34 UTC: The wind settled down, visibility got better. got her down nicely, nobody woke up. I'll let em snore a bit while I fill'er up for the next pilot. Your controls.

Hmmm...I wonder who the heck that was on the phone with me then, demanding we get those keys from Adak? x(
