Old one was getting a bit long in the tooth, so here's a new one.
Currently, Sandman has the baton, and is flying from SPQT.

Short statistics update:
Count hops total 47
Count hops valid 42
Count hops invalid 5
Count distinct pilots 17
Total time 65.87 hrs. Flight time + wait time, incl. invalid hops
Total flight time 60.91 hrs. Valid hops
Max. flight time, one hop 2.70 hrs. Valid hops
Total wait time (baton still) 1.67 hrs. Valid hops
Max. wait time (baton still) 0.23 hrs. Valid hops
Total flight time invalid hops 3.08 hrs.
Max. flight time invalid hops, one hop 1.02 hrs.
Total distance covered 20626.9 nm Valid hops
Max. distance covered, one hop 2292.6 nm Valid hops
Average groundspeed 338.6 Kts Valid hops
Max. groundspeed, one hop 884.2 Kts Valid hops
My current flight plan says it's about 28300nm, so we have approx. 70-75% done (based on the distance) - guestimating about 30+ hrs flight time left. Does that make sense?

Short update at UTC 13:20
Sim-Outhouse is currently aiming for MGGT Mexico
Depending on their flight plans:
- South 45 - Brazil - Hop to mid-west Africa (Gambia, Senegal, etc)
.... approx 12000+ nm left, would need the wild card (don't know if it's used yet), guestimation 48+ hrs, possibly 3 bonuses
- South 45 - Falklands - South Africa
.... approx 13000+ nm left, using jet-corridow (possibly B747? GS 900?), guestimation 44+ hts, also possibly 3 bonuses
Avsim: currently aiming for MKJS, on our tail, but still needs some more vintage flights (2-3?), my guess is they're following us back to HECA :). Copy-cats :D
"Fly safe" is really a great motto Pascal, if we keep it safe, we'll soon be ready for a big round of drings in Cairo!!

Just some leg notes:
Original destination was Halifax, diverted to ST. Johns CYSJ due to winds aloft. St Johns was better to use the jetstream. once I turned to the new heading, my GS picked up to 380-400.
Handflew the ILS into CYSJ for the first landing on Canadian soil, which is home country, so that felt good. Many thanks to those who scouted winds and airport for me!!!

Update: Currently 1000 miles inbound. Got up to 410 knots GS at FL240, but now I'm starting to pick up a strong crosswind and I'm down to 390 knots GS. ETE 2:30.
Update2: Currently 685 miles from the yet-to-be-named destination. The crosswind turned into a nice tailwind and now is back to a strong tailwind. GS has dropped a lot. Oh, and I'm flying the DC-6B.

Go Austin!! Bring that jewel-encrusted piece of wood back to Cairo (or first closer at least) so that we can finally get some sleep!! :D :D
Just a short statistic update - up to LIBD:
Count hops total 63
Count hops valid 57
Count hops invalid 6
Count distinct pilots 19
Total time 115.52 hrs. Flight time + wait time, incl. invalid hops
Total flight time 108.56 hrs. Valid hops
Max. flight time, one hop 25.97 hrs. Valid hops
Total wait time (baton still) 1.82 hrs. Valid hops
Max. wait time (baton still) 0.23 hrs. Valid hops
Total flight time invalid hops 4.93 hrs.
Max. flight time invalid hops, one hop 1.85 hrs.
Total distance covered 27272.3 nm Valid hops
Max. distance covered, one hop 2292.6 nm Valid hops
Average groundspeed 251.2 Kts Valid hops
Max. groundspeed, one hop 884.2 Kts Valid hops
I updated the grab / drop baton times up to the minute, not second - so those 1.82 hrs "baton still" is on 63 hops total, averaging 1.7 minutes/hop, just a bit more than my 1 minute +/-.
I've got a meeting coming up :(, I hope I can grab a chance to see you all in Cairo, otherwise I'll just wait for some of the other teams, I'm sure we'll meet up again!!

I'll post the Duenna info this evening, but the main cause of the crash is that I forgot one rule that my real world pilot friends emphasize"
When making an approach the pilot's goal must be a successful missed approach / go around - a good landing is a secondary goal
We discovered something very interesting about FS Real World weather last night - especially about reporting airports which are closed for much of the night.
Crash Sequence of EventsGreat flight and great work by Geno scouting 150 miles ahead to find FL for optimal winds. There is a temptation to fly the Avanti at the highest possible level - however the best winds for the first 500 nm were at FL370, then had to drop to FL300. Maintained 400+ kts ground speed from 25 miles out of ENOV until 70 miles from EGLC. Arrived at EGLC and picked up ILS lock 27nm out and 18 min under 2 hour leg time.
I had turned on the visual approach markers for some testing earlier in the day and forgot to turn them off. I was surprised to see them - at first I thought they were a bunch of television / radio transmission towers.
The glide slope into EGLC is steep and it felt like I was in a Stuka diving down.
The real world weather at EGLC had been reporting calm winds and clear for about an hour before the flight when first checked by the team, and throughout the flight. Yet a few miles away at Heathrow and Gatwick there was snow, reduced visibility and northwesterly winds.
A team member check of the real world METAR confirmed several times that the last report was approx 1130 local time.
The time of the flight would put me on the ground between 0630 and 0700 local time.
About 10nm out, the team member reported a new METAR for EGLC had been received with conditions similar to Heathrow. It was about 11 min old. I speculated that the next Real World Weather update would change the conditons at Heathrow. And that the update would occur right about landing time.
Approach to Rwy 28 just fine, though steep. Went through a bit of turbulence and rough weather but the Avanti in Approach mode for the Autopilot handled it perfectly. Rode the ILS on AP down to approx 500 ft AGL - 1/2 to 1/3 mile out from the threshold.
The weather went to clear and calm about 4-5 miles out and about 2300 ft AGL.
I checked and sighted the missed approach path and the location of the two buildings I would have to fly between.
I was also concerned about getting the aircraft stopped because I tend to float a bit on landings to softly touchdown.
Killed the Autopilot, had good control of the aircraft. Was flying with one hand light on the yoke and the other on the throttle. I was able to let the rudder stay centered with no pressure on the pedals.
The aircraft was approx 9800 lbs gross weight with about 45% fuel on board. I wanted to keep the aircraft above 110 kts until I could no anything but runway out the front 2D cockpit view.
I was about 115-118 kts, about 200ft AGL, starting to pull the throttle back and preparing to flare.
Real world weather hit - visibility dropped - not bad but very noticable, the aircraft tipped hard left when the relativly mild winds out of 343 at about 9 kts hit as a sudden gust.
I hit the rudder and turned the yoke, but I did not hit power and pull-up to execute a missed approach.
It took about 2-3 seconds for the aircraft to drop and pancake in about one aircraft length short of the threshold.
Cause of crash:
1. Pilot distraction on approach
2. Failure to execute missed approach in a timely manner when conditions changed suddenly
Contributing Factors:
1. Pilot fatigue - I had been up for 19 hours, flown approx 8 hours, stood on runways in backup position for 5 hours, and repaired a computer crash caused by a memory DIMM failure.
2. Pilot unfamilarity with airport and approach - didn't have a chance to shoot a couple approaches because of the way the team made the decision about flying the flight. The one pilot who had successfully completed a test flight in under two hours was concerned about his system reliability. That was a risk we should have taken, rather than putting me accepting the flight.
3. FS Real World Weather - EGLC is apparently closed from approx 2330-0630 local time - FS Real World Weather apparently creates a "bubble" around EGLC of clam weather when the airport is closed and not reporting weather. The team speculated on this, and I should have known better than to land at that time - knowing from the weather reports from other pilots in the area and the real world METAR that a sudden shift in weather conditons was highly probably.
I tried to get in before that happened and did not react properly when it occured.
Sorry guys, but we've all learned something valuable about the way FS works.

Hey guys, it was really extremely fun, I learned alot, it was a great team, keeping each other awake at the yoke with jokes, guys checking in and flying from the office with co-workers watching ;), guys running off "the boss is comming". It really must be more than just a hobby seeing how everyone here probably spent more time on TeamSpeak, in the FS than most everything else, including work and women :) - the flight is over, I'm still awed, amazed, dazed that we won. I think the peace and quiet we had on teamspeak with alot of the pilots on just now more or less sums it up: wow, can't believe we did it, teamwork at it's best!! Thanks all of you, even thanks to the other teams for keeping us on our tippy-toes, chasing us not halfway, but all the way around the world!
I'm putting together a short (ha ha) summary, report, journal of the race for team FlightSim (shouldn'ta opened my mouth, huh) - so please send me all screenshots, pictures, tapes, protocols, tales, videos, anything you've collected in the last few days. You should be able to get my email through the forum, or just send me a private-message, no problem.
So I'm outta here, heading back to real life for a bit, I'll digest all your input and put together the summary in a few days. Thanks for joining, hope to see you ALL online again soon!

On behalf of Geoff (Capn_Sonic) and me, many thanks for allowing the Multiplayer Adventures Forum to host our Around-The-World Race team.
A great effort from all participants. Looking forward to next year.

I want to echo the comments of gcurtiss above.
I've had FS for a few years, but I first flew online only about a month ago. I joined late some of the practice sessions / legs after John's invitation.
The support, enthusiasm, coordination and work of so many sim-fliers to pull this together was fantastic.
The team who organized the race and setup the rewards, and the risks, and the requirements did a fantastic job!!!
I'd never seriously tried to fly any of the vintage aircraft except the DC-3. I ended up with one hour successful flights in the Vega, the Comet, the Cub - and five hours and five successful flights in the Vimy -- YSSY-YPEC, YMLT-YMHB, & KMIA-KPBI x 3 - with the first one at night. The last two were a three person formation test right before completing the "official" leg - with two other pilots in Vimy's alongside for company.
A fantastic race, opportunity and something I will always remember with great fondness.
It's great to be on the FlightSim.com team and come in first this year, but more importantly is that I've learned, I've become much better and I've made new friends.
Thanks for the WONDERFUL four days.

TornadoWilkes (Ian) Duenna file says that the flight was invalid, but this was due because of his realism sliders being off.The Duenna also shows lots of refuels, but they were not during the flight. An appeal was made to validate the flight, and passed. So, the last flight was successful and we did indeed win. :-).
(Dont know why that dude was saying that the race wasnt over, probably just joking ;-))

Well, when we see the Duenna report being redflagged because of several refuellings while the baton was in hand, it does look suspicious. It has since been proved that he refuelled before and after the flight but not during, so we were wrong about the refuelling issue.
The race rules do say that the realism sliders must be full right, and as you said yourself, they weren't.
However, the board allowed the flight, so the flight and the victory stands.
So, I'll say again: congratulations! (But, if Murphy wasn't attacking us so often, things might have been different... :-lol )

I suppose if we had wanted to intentionally sidestep realism, we could have set the sliders anywhere and posted a flight analysis screen shot instead ;) Teamwork and determination won the day and my personal feeling is we ran an honest race (as did every team.)
Thanks to everyone on all sides involved for making this possible and putting together an excellent event. I wouldn't have missed it for anything, and had the opportunity to fly with a great bunch of guys.
Problem: I'm no longer able to function unless I've had heaphones on for 18 hrs and consumed at least 5 gallons of coffee. Is this condition permanent?

I keep wanting to push the PTT button on a keyboard when I talk on the phone or to my wife. I also had to wear a hat today because of headphone hear - a nice, flat band across the top of my head. My eyes feel like someone poured gravel into them and before driving anywhere I triple check my fuel guage, check the winds, and drive like a bat out of he11! I, too, hope this is not permanent.
In regards to some at AvSim raising a stink about the refueling, they ought to be grateful that we took our nice sweet time and flew an EXTRA leg in a helo... A HELO!... and didn't just sweep into Cairo to beat them by a few more hours than we did. Regardless, I had a great time - and I think all teams flew an honest and professional race. I've been on the losing side of this race twice and it is still a phenominal accomplishment to fly around the world with a team in such a short amount of time - but winning is especially sweet!

I bet Maxwell House (or whoever) is wondering why sales for coffee went up so high this week and are going to drop again next week :). What will I do without my daily dose of 8 espressos ..... (then again, I think it would be a good idea to fall into a small sleep-coma this weekend)
Regarding the last flight: I think, possibly, we could find a witness to the flight, maybe even two :).
Considerung that the in-flight refueling the Duenna reported added a total of 0.2 lbs, I don't think that would have made much difference for this flight :D :D - I'm not sure, but as the refuelling was added more or less last to the program, it most likely has a small issue with helicopters (which I'm not sure was tested much by the pilots). More likely, I think the FS / FSHost was acting up with all the players online, I noticed that the Duenna would in these cases shortly loose connection (when FS hung itself for 20-30 loooong seconds) and report this. We'll need to test this a bit better for next year, but looking back, I think it worked quite well, thanks for all the testing and ideas guys!!

Okay guys,
Challenges are all part of the race, and we have to take them in good spirits. If there is indeed foul play and someone is attempting to sidestep the spirit of the race then this should be raised and the judges/commitee are pleased to clear things up. In this case the judgement was made by other members of the commitee based upon the fact below... however in the spirit of openess and free debate please judge for yourselves ;-)
I'll copy the details here:
Challenge
Team Avsim is Challenging FS.com's last flight.
There is a 21 Second Duration error enroute at 15:16
There is also several other errors, all of which ar ebeing challenged, since these are Multiple instances of errors.
And His realism Setting reads .50 instead of 1.00, like everyone of Avsim's Text Duenna Logs.
The Duenna Graphic is Red, and We are of the opinion that their final leg is not valid an dthe baton for FS.co still resides at HEBA.
Please get together with the race Marshalls and let us know.
It took us quite a bot of time to figure this out, understanding Duenna, and looking up the Chinook to see what version they were flying as to HC2, or A , or whatever.
Response
Thanks for the Challenge... its good to see the race community feels this deeply. We have raised and had raised a number of challenges where we have looked to see whether any advantage was gained and I'm happy to be part of that process.
You're challenger is correct in stating that the Duenna shows an invalid flight with accompanying red box, however the following holds true:
1. The spirit of the race is the overriding measure of completion of a leg in all instances
2. The Duenna is simply a reporting tool to help understand if the spirit has been broken or not & is not the deciding factor, the judges and committee are.
3. The messages displayed by the Duenna are not the final judgement on whether a flight is legitimate or not, the system cannot deal with the limitations and errors of third party developers and is relatively untested against helicopters with their various engine layouts including jet which is not allowed in the rules for fixed wing aircraft, but perfectly acceptable for rotorcraft.
4. The Chinook is a jet helicopter
5. The crash tolerance slider had been adjusted before flight, however an FS restart did not occur. (The landing at Cairo was beautifully conducted as witnessed by 17 onlookers (check multiplayer photos))
6. The specific errors mentioned in the flight log are thus:
[li]2x fuel increasing by a fraction of a percentage
As the flight took place using a helicopter, there are no restrictions on where the flight must takeoff from. In this instance the flight both took off from and ended at a fuel bay. As can be seen from the baton times, the refuelling occurred both before takeoff and after landing, but not in between.
[li]1x error in flight. During the flight the Duenna lost its connection with FS and the flight froze automatically. An announcement was made via Teamspeak to this effect however upon hitting the Duenna reconnect button the flight continued as planned. Johannes Mueller was online at the time to verify this. (Edit: This is similar to the error which happened to Jeroen for AVSIM at NIUE and was judged fair)
7. Rotorcraft are allowed in the rules and the Chinook is an incredibly popular machine with over 10 models produced and in active service
Judgement
The judges concluded that the flight was fair, that the leg was not an attempt to skirt the spirit of the race. To quote some responses,
"By tradition (started by AVSIM), if the Race is essentially over we treat the Final Leg as do the participants in the Tour de France—sort of a ceremonial celebration of the event. A festive affair. No reason to worry about anything at all. We should simply be gentlemen about the whole thing and congratulate our colleagues over at FlightSim."
and
"The flight was viewed by many participants and the pilot had no reason to fudge the rules. So the Rules Committee has no reason to doubt that the flight was conducted properly—other than the Duenna, which we know is not the final arbiter. In the Rules Committee’s judgment, which is final in this case, the FlightSim final leg is accepted as valid."
Final comments
So once again the RTWR has proven controversial. Last year we were beaten by the Thunderscreech challenge (n.b. whilst technically the plane was legal it was ruled not in keeping with the spirit of the rules). However this year the challenge was not accepted as whilst it appeared at first glance to not be technically legal (although in retrospect it was judged to be) the commitee ruled on the spirit principle once again :-) I'm sure that in future years there will be challenges from both sides, however whilst FS.com appears to be the winner, I think the real winner is the "spirit of the rules."

Guys, Forget the post on Avsim. The flight was good and the race is won.
Full credit where it's due, to all involved. I somehow knew we were gonna be the victors because the team was excellent and the amount of countless hours testing really just emphasised the enthusiasm.
Many, many congrats to the team and all who were involved in the organisation, practice and race. You guys deserve a week away in the sun with a cold beer or two.

Hi there,

Especially because one can gain bonus hours in the bonus cities! we have 55 bonus hours time, will see how many your Team will get togheter, and then count "Race Time"-"Bonus time".
Good luck!

Hi dcc
I just wanted to say "thanks!" for that wonderful P38 which I've been flying so much in the last months preparing for the race and in the race as well!!
Do you have an estimated arrival time in HECA for SOH? We need to get started planing the After-Race-Survival-Party!! I suggest we go to a country with a nice brewed-beverage-history, how about Ireland :) or closer, a wine-country like Italy :)?
What would you guys think of a 3-Team-Groupflight from HECA to a place like this? The (virtual) beverage-tab is on the winners :); pilots, ground-crew and everyone else invited :D (just virtual drinks though, I can't check your ID-cards and have no idea which age-limit would count anyway)!
Who's up for another flight?

The Thunderscreech was technically illegal as it is a jet with an auxiliary prop and derives the majority of its thrust from that jet.

right now, my best guess is we'll get to Cairo in maybe 6 - 8 hours from now. I'm hoping we'll time it for after sun-up there (for good pics) and for when a good majority of our pilots can join us.
By the way, we really enjoyed those from FS and Avsim who joined us last night on our server, but it would probably be best if we had no visitors on the home leg to Cairo, as our FSHost server is someone limited in capacity.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to come over here and offer their congratulations. Much appreciated.
We are all part of the same community that is 'Flightsimming' and events such as this certainly reminds us of that.
Now that SOH are home and dry I need to lock this thread as it is becoming far too large. I am sure this years race will be discussed for sometime yet so can someone please start another thread.
Will unsticky all 4 threads and lock them today.
Will be moving them to archive in a day or two, once the new thread is underway.
Thanks to all. This has been the mother of all events passed and it wont be that long before we are planning 2006 RTW Race.
Well done to 'everyone' who participated.

**CONGRATULATIONS ON THE ENGAGEMENT!**
Now you need to mentally get ready to change diapers at 2AM instead of flying, forget about the sports-car and look for a used station wagon. One thing follows the other :), don't worry, you'll survive!!
Just a quick update on the weather guys, it's looking nice for the northern part of South America, further up we'll be fighting a strong crosswind, nothing we can't handle, but it might have an effect on the distances we can fly.
Also a note for the leg-planing: The 2 canadians would like those canada-legs: Dan "T-Wolf" preferring La Guardia - Halifax, Tony G would like the one following to Gander. If they aren't online in Teamspeak about one hour before the legs start, you can contact them via e-mail (through http://fs.softplus.net/fsweb - click on Availability, then click on their names to send them an email through the site). I'll try to get in on Teamspeak on time to pass this on to the next group, just in case :).
Going great guys! Go!
John

Hi to Team FlightSim,
Please take these incidental challenges for what they are: moments of competitive spirit during an event in which we all get totally immersed. When you play sports with your friends, tennis or golf or basketball or rugby or curling, these moments inevitably arise. We all understand, and then go have a beer afterwards.
So here is our heartfelt congratulations to Team FlightSim. An absolutely stellar performance by wonderfully skilled and dedicated pilots.
You are the champions and should thoroughly revel in the glory.
And please allow the rest of us to enjoy your victory—and to join in on the celebration. No one in the world better appreciates your achievement than your fellow racers at AVSIM and Sim-Outhouse. From all of us gathered in this great hall, you have earned a knowing admiration. Well done.
Three cheers for this year's winners: a toast to every one of you!
Best,
Mike MacKuen

We all look forward to seeing whose name will fill the next slot. Engravers are busy working on this already...

The flight took longer than I anticipated but went pretty much flawless. The C-118 is a sweet bird to fly and did almost all the work for me.
