Just a quick heads-up:
Swi_Tzer: The PC-21 will not be valid for the race, we'll need to find something else :( -- there is only one PC-21 "alive" at the moment, the other prototype crashed about a month ago... no 10 in service, so it won't be legal for the race.
The Starship is still being checked by the experts, let's hope they don't find that rocket-emergency-power module I installed :D (just kidding, no need to check)

Got a question on the 2 hour time limit for each flight: From what I understand of the rules it will be from takeoff until a complete and safe stop at an airport.
1. Can we stop on the runway ? Could save several minutes.
2. From the time we stop until we make our "Baton is free" post, does
that count towards the 2 hours or just the flying time counts ?

Hi Bobby
let me try:
1) Stop on the runway, land on the taxiway, it doesn't matter :). You just need to stop without crashing - so it's best to stop in the middle of the runway instead of trying a high-speed taxi around a tight corner..
2) The time counts from your post "I have the baton" up to the "Baton is free" post. You can however post your screenshot / validation sometime after your "Baton is free" post, as long as it's BEFORE the next guy lands (i.e. he can be on the way, no problem, just make sure it's before he lands.). If you have trouble posting the screenshot, by all means post it in the forum and ask for someones email adress, or if in doubt send it to ALL the adresses on our website (http://fs.softplus.net/fsweb), someone will take care of it :D! You'll have up to 2 hours to post it, but don't wait until last minute, the next guy might need to land before the 2 hour limit :).
Like Smitty said, if you FORGET to do the screenshot or forget to send the Duenna-graphic, YOUR flight will be invalid and ALL the ones afterwards as well. I'm sure you'll get reminders from everyone should it get close. Let's try to make sure it doesn't happen. If you have some kind of problems that you really couldn't make the screenshot, let us know as soon as possible so that we can refly the leg, no problem with that, hey, this is for fun not profit :)!

Hey Guys,
I have no problem managing the threads once the race has begun.
Just gimme a few pointers as to what is required.
I was thinking along the lines of 20 Posts per thread, then create a new thread. That way it won't slow down anyones ability to post and download the thread to read the baton location ect.. Also it will mean that I will only need to create a new one every 40 hrs or so (Providing there is no Idle conversation on the threads that is)
It may be a good idea to create a seperate thread alowing general chat for tactical talks etc...... (whatever)
Dunno how you guys wanna do it, or if you have a plan already. Just letting you know I am available if needed.

Diverting to 68J Tallahassee Commercial, ETA about 50 minsutes. Can't imagine flying this whole race east to west; really bad headwinds and crosswinds, and there's almost no choice for better altitudes that don't end up costing you more airspeed.

Hi TWolf
Yep, those East-to-West-legs ought to be illegal :D :D
Just a quick note, if you can't upload the graphic, send it to one of the other guys (at least during the race) :). Just a guess on my part, but I assume the log-file will count as well, since you have the Validation-ID in it and that can be crosschecked to the information in the log-file (in the Duenna, go to the Settings-window, there's a "Test a validation" button, copy+paste the texts exactly as it is here, if the validation-ID is correct it will say so).
Another one: guys, turn off those computers and spend some time with your "Significant other" - grab some "bonus points" for next week, when they won't be seeing much of you :D :D.
John, signing off to spend some time ..... ;)

Hi Geoff,
Plan is(during the event)to "chat" on TS and have a seperate channel to support the "active" pilot if needed. So therefore we should only be posting baton status during the race. Also each post should be retitled in the subject space to reflect the content of the post so that it will be easy to just look at the thread and "see" what's up.
Your managing the threads will be very important in that it frees us up to concentrate on the race. I think you can take matters from here. Geoff I would like also to thank you and everyone else who has and will be helping out in the "background". As with any team effort each task is very important and greatly appreciated.
You know if the occasion shows up and you find a couple of free hours, it would be great if you could fly a leg. Just let us know on TS when you think that might be and we will set you up.
Kind regards,
Austin

Austin,
How ya doin buddy.... Due to 'other comitments' as you know, I have been grounded to a certain extent. Things are starting to ease right now and hopefully I will get back to some sort of normality in a week or so. I didn't register my availabilty as a pilot because I really don't know if I am able to commit to flying at the time, however, if I get chance I would love to do a leg or two but I guess it will have to be as a last minute thingy as you suggest. If I get chance I will jump on TS and let y'all know.
Maybe you should state in the rules somewhere, a standard for post titles so that everyone is aware. Not sure about having the time to change each post title, that would be very time consuming and would require my undevided attn 24/7. Not really a possiblity I'm afraid.
Will do all I can as far as managing the treads and will correct any mistakes I see in post titles etc......
No probs.

Hi Twolf,
Just a reminder that the official time is the difference between the "I have the baton" and the "Baton is free" posts. The Duenna keeps your FS time and thus provides a nice analytic tool as well as a confirmation of your flight.
The "Official Race Time" is marked in the public forum--and you should plan on a couple of minutes "friction" in posting.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Hi TWolf
Don't worry about the seconds too much - if you can get to the best airport a couple of minutes late or it you have a delay posting to the forum, it won't invalidate your flight, we'll just need to wait a bit longer before starting the next leg. 2-3 Minute = 6-9 minutes delay, no big deal when you look at the big picture... (but try anyway :))
Something else: what seems to be the problem posting screenshots? Does anyone know if somethings been changed in the forum here? (that would be bad timing, huh) Do you get any error messages? Can you try other files? As long as we're in practice it's not that bad, but we don't have that much time left ...
Mike, how far is the text-log-file from the Duenna an official validation of the flight (assuming the validation ID is correct, like here)?

Hi Geoff,
Intention wasn't for you to have to rewrite the subject titles, but for whoever is doing the post. They just need to wipe out the RE: whenever they reply and change it to reflect what they are posting. The list of replys under the original post should(ideally) read alternately "I have the baton at XXXX" and then "The baton is free at YYYY" and then "I have the baton at YYYY" and so on. One look at the thread should tell whoever looks at it where the baton is and whether or not it's free. How's that sound to ya?

Edit: by the way Austin, you don't need to take a screenshot of the Duenna open - look at the text file, on the bottom it will have the path to the graphic (which is created directly). You can just copy + paste that into the field with the name of the attachment (where you have the "Browse" button) and then click on "Upload file". That'll save you some time and you don't have to clean up your desktop :) (wow, that's tons cleaner than mine, I have symbols lined up all the way across and down). And the text file you can just copy + paste out of the editor directly into the post.

JohnMueller
02-15-2005, 11:02 AM
Works really nice, I added half of my P38 Panel, so I feel really at home :). Just that landing part, I'll have to practice that a bit more. I came in with 130kts, landed on the numbers, but it just wouldn't slow down, even with full reversers, I left the runway going 50-60kts... Don't know if it was the snow or if I broke something on the way there (used the reversers just before I had the runway in sight to slow down more, dropped the gears with a bit too high speed). Practice Practice :)
Let me know if you guys need help with it, it's definatly not as sleek to use as the FSD-Avanti, but gets there fast enough and with a P38-autopilot it's easier to get where you want it.

Question about routing
CYFB-BGBW-BIKF is 1304.8nm in legs of 655.9nm and 648.9nm
CFYB-BGSF-BIKF is 1200.7nm in legs of 485.0nm and 715.7nm
The 715.7 nm distance is well within the two hour range of a P-38 or Piaggio Avanti or even the Cheyenne LS400 with some tail wind help.
BGSF has a localizer, though not a glide slope, to help with the landing at night and in bad weather. It is also in the middle of a fairly wide valley without obstructions on the approach to Rwy 10.
BGBW is a notoriously dangerous approach in bad weather up a fiord with turns required to miss obstructions. It is also basically a one way runway with landings on Rwy 7.
While some aircraft use CYYR, I've found articles that Pilatus uses CYFB for their delivery flights, and apparently Socata has moved their TBM-700 delivery flights to that airport also.
I'm just wondering why risk a extremely difficult landing at BGBW to shave 67.2nm off a leg, with a longer route?
JohnMueller
02-15-2005, 04:42 PM
Hi Reggie
you're completely right :) - we should really check those vital airports before commiting to a route. We'll need your experience when we have to choose the general direction and set the stepping stones when the rules are passed out. We should be planing a big virtual get-together somewhere (teamspeak?) for Saturday or Sunday - I think Austin is already planing (has planed?) something. Great to have you on the team!

Just a question that poped up while being thrown around in the plane when weather changes were loaded (going from 0 to 91kts crosswind is a bit of a change): is there a way to force FS to reload the real-weather? I.e. can I do this before a start and if I want, every 5 minutes or so (to keep strong changes from arriving from one moment to the next)? Couldn't find anything in the control assignments, but maybe I'm missing something easy :)?

02-16-2005, 08:32 AM
The sudden weather changes bit me last night.
I assume you were using FS2004 - haven't seen that anywhere, but.
The problem is the way FS calculates / loads real world weather. There is essentially no transition from one cell/coverage area to the next one.
In some areas of open ocean, that results in practically no weather. When approaching Stornoway last night, I had pretty good jet stream at approx 260 / 90 kts. I hit the Stornoway weather area and the winds changed to 170 / 45 kts instantly. Surface pressure had to change by 15-20 mb because the refernce altitude changed by 1800 feet.
I've seen these very sudden weather changes, especially on transoceanic crossings, quite often.
I've really never heard of any way to deal with them except add-on products - which are banned for this competition.

Great job guys! We're back home again. Here's the practice session summary:
http://smithplanet.com/rtw/images/1.gif
Legs flown: 54
Miles flown: 35477.60 nm
Average hop length: 656.99 nm
For those of you who are new, welcome aboard! And if you'd like to update the baton tracker and use the flight planning tools, you can do so at http://smithplanet.com/rtw/ and be sure to sign up at http://fs.softplus.net/fsweb/
A good practice area would be southeast asia and up and over the bering strait to Alaska. The time restrictions and flight planning in this area is very critical, not to mention that the weather tends to be pretty nasty this time of year.

Hi Smitty
wow, nice map, I'm putting that one up on my site too + push it into my desktop :). Thanks for the good work!
Just a suggestion regarding the next practice, I'd say it would be good to go where we haven't been so far, who knows where the start will be, it might really not be on the route everyone's been training (like you said in our private forum, Smitty). My suggestions:
- Southern Africa
- Nothern Europe/Scandinavia
- Nothern Asia / Russia, China, etc.
- West coast of South America (ok, Avsim went here :))
With just a few days left (and the last day before certainly excluded), it might be a good idea to "play" in one or more of these areas. How about we let the first pilot to take the next hop decide? :D
GO TEAM, GO! Hey, have I told you it's great to be on this team?!!

Registered FSUIPC smoothes the wind changes nicely. What's this about add-on products? Guess I need to read the rules again, but I'm assuming FSUIPC does not fall into that category.
Mark
JohnMueller
02-16-2005, 03:28 PM
Hi Mark
FSUIPC should be ok, as it doesn't really change the weather, it just smoothes out the differences (i.e. it doesn't give you tailwind where others would have headwing, SADLY). It will however, screw up the display in "WeatherSet2" and other similar guages/tools, which I use to check the winds aloft. To use it or not? I dunno, use it if you're used to it :).

Sounds great. Someone take the baton and run. Maybe I'll take a hop later tonight. We might want to practice in the Northern Hemisphere as it is winter up here and the weather can prove a challenge. Of course, Africa is challenging too because there are so few airports.
Thanks for the comments on the map. You can always get the updated race map at smithplanet.com/rtw/images/1.gif We're going to try to update it in real time.
I'm also going to be doing a 3-team race map updated every few hours. It will look something like http://smithplanet.com/rtw/racemap.jpg (numbers made up)

OK Guys, this will be my first practice leg, I have been busy trying to clear stuff at work, so I can devote as much time as possible to the race!!!I am departing ESKN Sweden for UMII Vitebsk, Belarus. Do some Northern Hemisphere and work our way across Russia or south.
I have the Baton 8:34 UTC in the Cheyenne.

About 225 miles out, hitting some headwind, but still doing about 315 GS. I am getting snow at 37500' though! About 40 min out.
UPDATE------> Going to UMMS Minsk 2. Better field than 1800' grass! Shoulda thought that out.
UPDATE 2 ----> Crashed after missed approach. Sorry, I'll learn from that. Humbles ya a bit.

Hi Tony
That's what practice is for :). Better to crash now than next week, but even then we'll have it - that's life. Thanks for the try, hope to see you the latest next week in the air again!

Hi
...well, now @ FL250, crosswinds of about ~15kts from right, out of the clouds, finally (till 18000ft)! A halfmoon is illuminating the cloud layer below me and a small layer over me giving nice auroras...
Hemm... have a GS of 276kts for now, hoping for better tail wind.
Scheduled arrival airport: UWWW - Kurumoch, Samara, Russia
going in the back relaxing a bit ;-)

Nearest Airport list is pretty scarce out here :)
Heading 90-150 would be ideal.

UTC 15:50 Crashed in BIEG :(((
dang plane just wouldn't slow down, overran the runway, over the snowy fields of island, down a small hill and into the next rise :(
Baton is back at BGBW, sorry guys, good thing this is practice, that would have meant a nice loss... Lesson learned: too fast = go around unless the runway is 2miles long. ARGH, I bang my head. Tried to make it on time, pushed my luck, don't do as I do :)). Duenna graph enclosed, just to see the nice tailwinds I was riding, oooh that GS (58 seconds overspeed ;) - but it all doesn't matter if you can't land)!

PS Which direction next? Where do we need more practice?
PS2 Can someone tell me how I managed to take off at 11:06 utc, and land 1.5 hours latere at 18:18 UTC? It was night when I got there ;). I thought I had it set up wrong when I left, but it looks ok - just those Strange FS-time zones ....
