G0D why does the compression kill my shots? I'm running FS9 on 1600x1200 and it looks amazing on my system...Whenever I turn them into JPG they look like #####. Can anyone help me on this?

Hi Meine...... nice shots (I think they look good and are nice angles and such) ..... and congrats on the system! I'm not jealous ..NOT! :-lol

The thing about jpg compression is this;

If you have a lot of detail in the entire pic, it will need to be compressed more to achieve a certain filesize. This will make the quality worse but the alternative is to have higher filesize.

So if you have that same plane but on a clear sky (like you last pic) as a background, you could compress way less and it would be the same filesize as those you have there (I'm just saying that as an example .... not saying your pics shouldn't include city backgrounds as part of the whole point of screenshot posting is showing the pics you want).

Looking at the filesizes for your pics you can see what I just mentioned.

the pics are are all between 60 kb and 89 kb but the last one is only 29 kb! So with that one you could have compressed far less to achieve better quality and still had the end result be around 75 kb

It's nice to have a visual preview in the program you use to compress. I use PhotoImpact ( www.ulead.com ) and can see the before and after for the pic at whatever the compression slider is at .....also the filesize . Many programs like photoshop elements , paint shop pro have this.

Anyway, here's some technical info on compression

Sometimes sharpening a tiny bit can help make the detail come out again after shrinking the pic

Hope you don't mind me changing your pic as an example.

keep in mind that since I downloaded your compressed jpgs and edited them and resaved as a compressed jpg again, they lost quality. That's why you should never save as jpgs if you want to reopen the image later for editing.

Or if you want to edit it later, save as lossless JPEG...

Great shots!

Hey, nice shots!

Regarding your question - what do you use for processing the picture?

Of course there are a lot of different applications - but there is nothing as poverful and reliable as Photoshop.

The point is that when you reduce the size of jpeg file, you need to increase pixels per square inch, say in Photoshop default for 1024x768 resolution will be 96 pixels per inch, so when you shrink the picture - increase it to 120 - all will be tip-top.
Also some applications are making photos look really crappy when you reduce the size - Microsoft Photo Editor for instance.

I posted recently screenshots twice - one with Rockwell Commander just out of Banff and initially the photo looked great after I worked on it using Photoshop, but then I shrinked it with Microsoft Photo Editor, and couldn't recognize the photo....Unfortunately, relized it

And another set on this forum - Beaver from Haines to Whitehorse - photos were processed with Photoshop only - the difference is obvious.

But the shots are nice.

Good luck!

i use Paint Shop Pro 9,and 8. I reduce then sharpen and click SAVE AS jpeg then OPTIONS run OPTIMIZER and reduce to under 100k.

Again i think its time to increase the size limit to 125k. We are talking FS9 here, with highly detailed addons, and i think Flightsim should consider this for we are showcasing alot of payware.

ooops hehe forgot, great shots and congrats on your investment.

David: Thanks a lot, appreciate it...seriously ;) I am going to download PhotoImpact and post another set of shots as soon as a I get time (4 day weekend coming up;))

Angus: Glad you like em;)How can I save it as 'lossless JPEG'

SD_BFU: Thanks man, I don't like them at all...They look so good on my sim whenever I put it here is like :-irks THe program that I used to compress those pictures is InfranView 3.95

Keyno: :-lol I don't regret spending my money in what I did, it will be a VERY good idea to increase that size limit to 125k it will be so much easier to post shots, everyone can enjoy em more :9

Vincent: hahaha Yeah, although I have bought this...I've spent more than 6months getting everything, since saving about 1000bucks is not easy...:-roll What I did was to buy stuff little by little and eventually I assembled the whole thing. I will post shots as soon I get this sorted out and I can enjoy looking at em;)

Bob: Thanks Bob, lol it looked really good whenever I was playing fs9 and now when I look at it here it really sucks...But if you like it then...:-cool

*To Everyone: Thanks to all of the help and comments guys, I will download one of the programs and post the same shots but obviously compressed differently (hopefuly they will look right) If this works out...then...:-jumpy

Hey man thanks, yes it is...I don't get to travel to it in real life but by the detail in FS9 you can tell ;) What do you think of the shots with PSP? Is it better?
