Honolulu, Hawaii - At approximately 12:30pm on October 18, a jumbo jet nearly careened into another airliner on its landing roll at Honolulu International airport.
The Landmark Airlines Boeing 747 landed long on the airport's runway 22 Left without noticing that a Continental Airlines Boeing 757 was stopped on the runway holding short of runway 22 Right. Upon seeing the stopped 757, the captain of the 747 hit full reversers and full brakes, and swerved hard to successfully avoid a collision.
It is unknown why the air traffic control tower held the 757 where it did, nor is it known how the tower let the 747 land with the 757 parked there.
"I guess my attention was busy with the usual after-touchdown activities," said the 747 captain, Dave Coulter, "and just didn't notice the other aircraft stopped on the runway. If I'd seen it, I would have gone around. I'm just glad we were able to get that seven-four stopped so quickly!"
The 747 incurred significant brake damage from the hard stop, and several tires were found to have extensive wear nearly to the point of blowouts. The aircraft has been taken out of service for repairs.
Officials from the FAA have launched an investigation into the incident. Staff in the control tower declined our interview. There were no significant injuries.
