Louisville City Information:
Population: 256.231
Haven't found very much :-roll --> Louisville is widely known as the Derby City, because of the running of the famed Kentucky Derby each May at Louisville’s Churchill Downs race track. But the city has much more to offer than this one spectacular event. Louisville Hotels abound so there is no problem with finding a place. Whether you are visiting Louisville (pronounced Louahvul) on business or for pleasure, the “River City” will dazzle you with its blend of restored historic sites and chic new corporate buildings, arts, sports, and of course, race horses. The city offers a year-round performing arts calendar that includes ballet, opera, orchestra and theater, which make Louisville the cultural center of the mid-west. Businesses will find Louisville’s central location at the Falls of the Kentucky River, a perfect convention location. The Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center is located a stones throw from the airport on a 400-acre (1.62 km²) site that houses year-round events and attracts more than four million visitors each year. The Commonwealth Convention Center in the heart of the downtown area is newly expanded to offer 300.000 square feet (27.870 m²)of convention space in the heart of the city. And the downtown area offers a variety of hotel and motel accommodations at reasonable prices and with a variety of amenities. The Louisville Extreme Sports Park is one of the nation’s best skate parks, featuring a 24 ft (7.3 m) full-pipe. The park offers a great balance of street-style, transition-style and vert. The park's 40.000 square feet (3.716 m²) of outdoor concrete skating surface and a wooden vert ramp is something to see. The park draws extreme sports enthusiasts from across the country. The Louisville Zoo is another great place to visit. Local Newspaper: Louisville Courier Journal.

Kentucky was the first region west of the Allegheny Mountains to be settled by American pioneers. James Harrod established the first permanent settlement at Harrodsburg in 1774; the following year Daniel Boone, who had explored the area in 1767, blazed the Wilderness Trail through the Cumberland Gap and founded Boonesboro. Politically, the Kentucky region was originally part of Virginia, but statehood was gained in 1792. Gen. Anthony Wayne's victory in 1794 at Fallen Timbers in Ohio marked the end of Native American resistance in the area and secured the Kentucky frontier. As a slaveholding state with a considerable abolitionist population, Kentucky was caught in the middle during the Civil War, supplying both Union and Confederate forces with thousands of troops. Kentucky prides itself on producing some of the nation's best tobacco, horses, and whiskey. Corn, soybeans, wheat, fruit, hogs, cattle, and dairy products are among the agricultural items produced. Among the manufactured items produced in the state are motor vehicles, furniture, aluminum ware, brooms, apparel, lumber products, machinery, textiles, and iron and steel products. Kentucky also produces significant amounts of petroleum, natural gas, fluorspar, clay, and stone. However, coal accounts for 85% of the total mineral income. Louisville is famous for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, and the Bluegrass country around Lexington is the home of some of the world's finest race horses. Other attractions are Mammoth Cave, the George S. Patton, Jr., Military Museum at Fort Knox, and Old Fort Harrod State Park.
Little Rock City Information:
Population: 183.133
Bordering the south side of Little Rock is I -30, which cuts across the river, past downtown and then makes a sweeping turn across the southern swamp area of Fourche Creek and heads south toward Hot Springs and Texarkana. On the northern side of Little Rock, hugging the sweeping turns and curves of the Arkansas River is Highway 10. This highway (also known as Cantrell Avenue) will run you the full length of Little Rock, from east to west. I-430 crosses the Arkansas River just west of one of the two Little Rock area damns and runs directly south until it connects with I-30 on the southern side of the city. With these three roads you can effectively circle "Greater Little Rock."
The explorer Hernando de Soto first crossed the Mississippi into what is now Arkansas in 1541. Since the fabled gold he was looking for was not found, the Spanish soon lost interest in the area. The French explorer Bernard de la Harpe called attention to the area in 1722 with reference to the rock formations he called La Petite Roche and La Grande Roche on the banks of the Arkansas River. The area of the 'little rock' turned out to be a convenient area for crossing the Arkansas River, near a Quapaw Indian settlement. La Harpe built his trading post at this point on the river. The 'big rock,' a little further upstream, later became the site of an Army post. The 'little rock' can be seen today downtown in Riverfront Park. A trapper named William Lewis built his home at the Little Rock post in 1812. When Arkansas became a territory in 1819, the capital was at Arkansas Post, a site downriver. Two years later, it was moved to the bustling area of Little Rock. Little Rock was incorporated as a city in 1831 and became the state capital when Arkansas was admitted into the union in 1836. The territorial history of the city and the state is interpreted at the Arkansas Territorial Restoration, where living history portrayals and displays depict the period. This complex of buildings includes the territorial capital building, where the government met before Arkansas was made a state. Arkansas is unique in being the only state capital with three capital buildings still standing. The second is now known as the Old State House Museum, where the state's first governor was sworn into office in 1836. This was the seat of government until 1911. The present capital building was only partially completed when the general assembly started sessions there in 1911, and was completed in 1916. Little Rock was the center of a tug-of-war between the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. The Federal arsenal in Little Rock was seized by anti-Union forces in February 1861. In May of that year, Arkansas seceded from the Union. The Confederate state government moved to Washington, Arkansas in 1863, after Little Rock was taken over by the Union. During the time the Confederates were in Washington, AR, the Union had its own state government functioning in Little Rock under Isaac Murphy. It was truly a divided state. More than 10.000 federal loyalists fought in the northern part of the state against the Confederate army. Arkansas was readmitted to the Union in 1868 only after the Murphy government was replaced by a totally new Northern Republican government. In 1874, a month-long struggle known as the Brooks-Baxter War erupted over a gubernatorial election, which ended only when President Grant ruled that Elisha Baxter was indeed the rightful governor. After this debacle, the Democrat Augustus H. Garland won the next election. However, after many years of this rule, which favored businesses, the agricultural interests were suffering. Jeff Davis was elected Governor in 1900 on the promise of redressing the wrongs done to the agricultural community. This became known as the Agrarian Revolt. By the 1880s, Little Rock was the center of a sinewy network of railroad lines. Even today, Little Rock is the chief market for the state, especially in terms of agriculture, lumber and bauxite. An increasing tourism trade is blossoming across the state. As the state's largest metropolitan area, Little Rock is touting its historical and cultural attractions to great benefit. In 1969, the economy of the city of Little Rock received a great boost when a series of locks and dams were opened on the Arkansas River, effectively making the city a river port. What many consider one of the defining scenes of the civil rights movement played out in Little Rock. In 1957, nine black students attempted to attend Little Rock Central High School, under a 1954 Supreme Court ruling against racial segregation. Troops were called out by the governor to prevent them from attending. President Eisenhower stepped in to prevent the state from interfering, and federal troops replaced the state troops. This is now commemorated at the Central High Museum and Visitor's Center, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Of course, Little Rock moved to center stage with the election of William Jefferson Clinton as President of the United States. The former governor was a lifelong resident of Arkansas, and two-term governor. The Clinton Presidential Library will soon be added to the cultural jewels of the town on the river, 'La Petite Roche.'
Arkansas State Information:
Land area: 52.068 square miles (134.856 km²)
Population: 2.710.079
Capital: Little Rock
Nr. of Counties: 75
10 largest cities: Little Rock 183.133; Fort Smith 80.268; North Little Rock 60.433; Fayetteville 58.047; Jonesboro 55.515; Pine Bluff 55.085; Springdale 45.798; Conway 43.167; Rogers 38.829 and Hot Springs 35.750
Governer: Mike Huckabee
Spaniard Hernando de Soto was among the early European explorers to visit the territory in the mid-16th century, but it was a Frenchman, Henri de Tonti, who in 1686 founded the first permanent white settlement—the Arkansas Post. In 1803 the area was acquired by the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Part of the Territory of Missouri from 1812, the area became a separate entity in 1819 after the first large wave of settlers arrived. The next several decades were marked by the development of the cotton industry and the spread of the Southern plantation system west into Arkansas. Arkansas joined the Confederacy in 1861, but from 1863 the northern part of the state was occupied by Union troops. Food products are the state's largest employing sector, with lumber and wood products a close second. Arkansas is also a leader in the production of cotton, rice, and soybeans. It also has the country's only active diamond mine; located near Murfreesboro, it is operated as a tourist attraction. Hot Springs National Park and Buffalo National River in the Ozarks are major state attractions. Blanchard Springs Caverns, the Historic Arkansas Museum at Little Rock, the William J. Clinton Birthplace in Hope, and the Arkansas Folk Center in Mountain View are also of interest.
