View Full Version : Engine Failure

Hello,
I was flying the default King Air 350, and in the failures I set a random engine failure for engine no. 1 within 10-20 minutes. Well, it happened, as I could see from the instruments. But then I switched to outside view and the engine was still running normally! As if nothing had happened. Both engines looked exactly the same, running nicely. Is this normal, or is there a problem with my installation?
Thanks,

If you did have an engine failer, the it would take a few moments before you'd see the prop slow down.
You probably just didn't wait it out long enough to se anything happen.

Mmmmh... I stared at the prop for about 5 minutes (while the ap was flying) and nothing happened. Shouldn't take THAT long to slow down I guess.

Set the propeller of the failed engine to 'feather'. Look in the engine control dialogue.
Did you experience assymetrical thrust? If so, it failed. If you were descending, your speed may have been increasing, and as a result, more air flows through the prop, speeding it's 'spin speed'. Try a quick climb next time.

In the Seneca V I fly in real life, the emergency Checklist that are supposed to be by memory are as follows: First you experience the engine failure, Immediatley set your heading bug and keep the plane pointed there.
1, Mixture to full rich, both engines.
2, Pitch full fine, both engines.
3, Power full ahead, both engines.
4, Confirm flaps are retracted.
5, Confirm gear is up.
6,Then you Identify which engine is in trouble, by feeling which one of your feet is not firmly planted on the rudder to keep her straight. This is the bad engine, confirm with your engine gauges.
7,Here is where you would call fire no fire the co-pilot tells you either one. if he says fire in the engine
The you switch fuel selector off, bad engine.
8,prop fully feathered.
9,mixture Idle cut-off.
10, fuel pump is off and engine cowl flaps are closed.
So prop fully feather, make sure it is the right one . It has been know to happen in real life and sadly those people are not here with us today.
Then you save your good engine.
Bring the power back to 75 % if you are able (the seneca V has absolutely no problems with this. ) and also bring back the pitch to the proper cruise setting. Squak 7700 and then declare an emergency. Then you call for the checklist.
In the case of no fire, you would do everything the same up to the point where you ask for fire no fire. In the case there wasn't you would start your restart checks.Which are:
1, Mixture full rich.
2, Prop full fine.
3, Fuel selector crossfeed
4, Fuel pump on
5, Engine mags on
6. Try restart.
No restart then shut down the same way as fire.
This seems quite long reading but in real life scenario it would be done in approx. 3 mins. First done by memory then double checked on the checklist.
I hope this was interesting to someone and that it was easy to understand, afterall I am a pilot not a grammar teacher.
Regards
Chris
