I just downloaded the Il-2 Sturmovik demo. Why is it that no developers put swastikas on Luftwaffe aircraft? Any Ideas?

Many would find it offensive and even more would simply consider it very poor taste.
The publishers are German, and there are very strict laws in that country preventing depiction of such right wing symbolism. A publisher like Ubisoft is wise in their decision to play it safe.
However from a purist point of view I find this unsatisfying as well. Taste is an arbitrary thing and it leaves a lot of room for debate. Some people are offended just by the word Luftwaffe. Others argue that the red star on the Russian planes is also a symbol for a horrifying regime which has murdered countless individuals. I feel it is best to leave politics and taste out of it and stick to realism as the guideline in a historical aviation simulation.
The IL2 Resource center has some skins with authentic tail markings. Check out these BF109s:

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-01 AT 05:30PM (EDT)[p]I find the designers hypocritical! they are posting Former USSR symbols! I lived in USSR back in 1980's and was born there so I find things like Hammer & Sickle/Red Star offensive to me. they should be regulated just as the Swastika has. They (USSR) caused me alot of grief pain and suffering, I am trying to put that part of my life behind me! :)

I think its less hypocracy, and more bowing to political pressure. The same thing happened to model kits a couple of years ago, with the WW2 German planes being supplied without Swastikas. Personally, I favour accurate representation, so if the original sported Swastikas or Hammer & Sickle symbols, then the representation should as well.
Given that the Swastika was originally an Eastern peace symbol hijacked by the Nazis, its not always a good idea to dwell too much on the symbolism. There were numerous symbols used by both regimes, and you won't be able to ban all of them.

It's not hypocrisy. It's quite simply illegal to sell anything with a Swastika in Germany.

The same thing happens in my other hobby which is plastic modeling. The swastika is sometimes in 2 pieces on the decal sheet so not to offend the countries that may be affected by the "meaning" of it. To me, I want to see it and the red star and all of it, purely because of historical value. The world must be able to seperate the two things. I surely hate what they stand for, but realize the difference between history and being offended.

Yeah, I agree with Alister and Donmo, I understand that they are just symbols, but still, I would rather have the... Red Star on a WW2 Soviet YAK or something, but I do realise that it is better to be accurate rather then 'Fake' looking, and The designers are not Neo Nazi's or Neo-Communism people. P.S. Nice to hear from ya too Erick, (GET ON ICQ ONCE an Awhile!) :D

Like some other people said it is because they are illegal in Germany. I am one of the people that thinks they should be in the game, I like it to be realistic. The law is the law though. It shouldn't be that hard to add them yourself, apparently it is VERY easy to paint planes in Il-2.

Bear in mind though that any repaints you do will show up in multiplayer, but not in single play. That said, you can set up a multiplayer mission and be the only live human in the game, so it isn't too much of a drawback.
