uring my childhood I
spent most of my time at aerodromes with my father, who is a flight
instructor. In the middle of the 50s we often visited the nearby
airport of Zurich and watched the old propliners like Super
Constellations, DC-6s, Convair Metropolitan etc.
It was very impressive to see the ceremony of the starting and warming up of the piston engines. I still remember this sound clearly after 40 years and I think it is this sound that makes me go to airshows with old airplanes.
Fourty years ago it was only a boys dream to fly with such a silver bird and ten years later they all had disappeared.
So it was a extremely rare chance to see a Douglas DC-4 in middle Europe when Swissair leased a DC-4 for the 50 years anniversary of their transatlantic flights in May/June 1997.
It was an absolute must for me to fly with this airplane and I had the luck to get a flight ticket.
My plan was to make records of the plane on video tape and use the sound for my MS Flight Simulator and make it available for everyone. After a fantastic flight I had one hour of DC-4 details and Pratt + Whitney engine sound on my tape. I wonder what sound.wav I can make out of it...
The capabilities of Flight Simulator 98 allow a much better realisation of new ideas and open a new dimension for all home computer pilots.
