When you start up Flight Unlimited III, 95% of the graphics you experience came from this group. Everything from the clouds, to the buildings, objects, aircraft, panels, and ground scenery. This is the group that makes that all happen. Now lets take a closer look.
Matt handled the clouds and the A.I. for the aircraft. He took a few minutes
to show us some of the different textures he has been working on and how he
did them. Every kind of cloud effect you can imagine is covered in the new
product.
Alex has been responsible for that incredible cockpit art that you see
on all the prerelease pictures. By cockpit art we mean everthing, including
the panels. Alex explained to me that it takes four different versions of each
panel to handle all the different light variations that you could experience
during flight. Each one we looked at seemed better than a real photo.
Yoosun is the artist for the the 3D world objects. During our visit she showed us an aircraft carrier
out at sea. Every detail could be seen in the graphics. She took the time to show
us one of many picture books she was using to get ideas. Her
work was better than the photographs in the book.
The best part is the fact that the editor will ship with the product along with the library
of 3D objects. You will be able to make your own, add them, and use ones she has made for
the library that never made it into the final scenes. Just when you think it can't get any
better, Yoosun demonstrated how you can use the editor to create a path for the object to move
along in the program. It will move once along the path, back and forth or cycle. Thats right,
watch out for moving vehicles, and roaming cows in those farm yards if you plan on doing soft field
landings.
Duncan is the lead artist in the group. He was a 3D artist at Papyrus for 3 years. At Papyrus
Duncan's primary responsibilities were car modeling. For Flight III, Duncan is responsible for
aircraft visual models and he oversees the other artists. He also has a fine collection of
Japanese Robots second to none. It was great talking with Duncan, although his phone kept ringing
with other groups wanting to know when things they wanted were going to be done. I kept hearing
him give the answer, "How about right now!". See all those post-it (tm) notes. I bet that guy is
very busy!.
They call Karen the "Terrain Goddess" and I can certainly see why. When I first approached her
monitor I thought I was looking at a photograph of Mt. Rainier. Turns out it was the finished graphics
already in the program. Karen showed us how she takes the REAL topographical maps of hundreds of
square miles and creates this huge mosaic. The mosaic basically mimics the map you see behind her
on the wall. Then, with the artistic quality that only a Goddess can have, she blends all the square
edges and lines in the mosaic to create the breath taking scenery of Flight Unlimited III. This is
the only Flightsim product I can think of that actually has the accuracy of every little hill, valley,
road, lake, pond, river and trail. So what you see when you fly over it in this program is REALLY there
in real life.
