Stansted Scenery

By Lee Norrie (7 September 2000)

Introduction

Hi all flightsimmers. A few months ago I wrote a review on John Young's great scenery, but I am pleased to announce that he has made a beautiful sequel to this already stunning visual scenery. About a month ago I received an email from John saying he was working on this newly revised Stansted scenery after a friend of his, who is a controller at Stansted, let him into the airport for a day to take some pictures. How lucky can you get! Anyway on to the point.

The Scenery

Let's start with the terminal buildings that have come a long way since the last scenery file. It was cool, but had a few problems that don't need addressing in this review. The terminal buildings are now transparent and you can see the plants inside the buildings. Not the whole inside, as Wilco did though. Anyway, the terminals are very detailed, complete with gates and the lovely parking bay. John has added an apron texture that looks great because it is in different shades along the way, which makes it look as though there have been planes on the taxiway. The new taxi lines are lovely too because they stand out more and are no longer thin little yellow lines but nice thick clear ones. The static aircraft are also nice, seeing as they are more detailed looking--or maybe it's just the scenery that makes them look better. At night time the tails of some of the static aircraft are lit which is really cool and makes you feel at home--my true home is in the flightdeck of a Boeing 737 (I wish!).

The nice little signs on the grass make it even better and make taxiing fun as you have something to look at. But let;s get onto the big daddy--the night lighting. Woooooooo!! This is the life. The apron is so beautiful at night time with the whole bloody thing lighted up, which I love getting some wing views and taking off. Oooo!! Did I say that at daytime there are small white faint lights to see even better? That is cool. At night time where the lines are there are lovely green lights and the lovely blue lights and then the nice runway lights which are essential. But as far as freeware scenery goes I have never seen such a detailed apron. Not to much to explain because it is so cool. I now feel so much like a pilot and with my greaser landings and being only a 12 year old plus flying out of the airport for KLM VA is cool. By the way, go to that hub if you are going to join because the hub manager is Andrew Mcfall and he is a great guy. Always loyal and I am making it up to him by taking the pressure off and becoming Crew Chief. Anyway, I get to see a lot of this scenery and its great.

Frame Rates

On my computer they are top notch and I only have a small machine compared to others out there, but these frame rates are high and they make landings fun. But it also makes the scenery more fun because I can fly around and enjoy the scenery and not just have all this pausing.

Flaws

There is only one problem that I discovered and that is a small bit of flickering on the apron. You guys may find more but this was the only one I found. Well, also the ILS thingies are mucked up. I don't know whether the apron problem is the scenery or my video card. I guess I'll have to ask John that one.

Conclusion

This is good scenery and I recommend it to all the people flying out of Stansted because you will surely have some fun and every flight is enjoyable. Anyway good on ya John and thanks.

I reward you 99.5 out of 100 for this scenery. It would have been 100 if that Fickering on the apron could be fixed.
