AM Radio Gauges

By Roger Gaylor (25 May 2000)

Afternoon, fellow simmers. Maddog here to give you an update on the AM Radio gauge review I did a few weeks back. Rob Clark has been a busy bee on perfecting the AM Radio gauge for FS98, CFS and FS2000. As the first versions were big and bulky and included the WAV files within the gauge Rob has been working hard to come up with a more efficient way to use the wav files and add some variety. And he has done just that.

The third version, even though the end user could pick his wav files to use, was still inefficient and FS took a performance hit when in use. Adding night lighting and such he further enhanced the code so that you could not only use WAV files, but also the ever more popular MP3 type files. Wow, how about that for variety. But that's not all as the story goes. Rob, not fully content, kept working on code to lighten the size of not only the gauge but the song files and BAM, he did it! Finally after hours and weeks of hard work the MIDI version of the AM Radio Gauge has now been realized. Not only is the gauge file just 61 k in size but now you can load the ever so small MIDI files and no matter where you fly, even with full density on FS, it does not take a performance hit of any kind. And if you don't own any MIDI files you can download millions from the Internet. Not only that, but there is also a version that will play your musical CDs.

Here are the different versions so far. All have been uploaded now to FlightSim.Com, so go get 'em and happy flying...and listening.
