Review: Mega Airport Madrid Barajas X

By Alexander Czarnecki
January 15, 2012

The Real-Life Airport

Today Madrid Barajas Airport is the most important airport of Spain and the fifth most important of Europe with 34 million passengers a year. Barajas serves as the gateway to the Iberian peninsula from the rest of Europe and the world, and is a particularly key link between Europe and Latin America. The airport is the primary hub and maintenance base for Iberia. Consequently, Iberia is responsible for more than 60 percent of Barajas' traffic.

It has three terminals with 295 check-in stations, six of them are situated at the exposition center IFEMA and 40 are situated in the Metro Station of "Nuevos Ministerios". The airport has two control towers and runways. (Wikipedia)

Aerosoft quotes features as:

System requirements as:

Installation

Installation is easy. Put the DVD in your DVD drive, and if you have autorun enabled, the installation menu should appear. The options are installed into FSX or installed into FS2004. You will need to input a serial key which should be on the inside of the DVD box.

In installation there is also an option to install static aircraft. If you don't have AI traffic you enable them; if you do, do not enable them to include maximum parking spots for AI traffic.

This is a review for the FSX version.

Description

This scenery is developed for Aerosoft by well known scenery developer Simwings, which also developed Mega Airport Heathrow X, among others.

The airport is a big improvement over the default with highly detailed apron textures and ground poly. Simwings does the best ground polys in the business in my opinion. Super sharp and with just the right amount of weathering to look realistic. Also because the ground textures are a polygon/model, they resist blurring unlike some other companies' scenery packages.

The amount of ground/service vehicles is good and really adds to the life of an airport. And there is a good amount of ramp clutter.

The buildings are generally good, and are accurately modelled and placed in comparison to real world photos. However in some places there are some blurry textures with not the best quality, although these places are hard to see.

The jetways are not animated.

Performance: With it being a big, complex airport, frames are generally about 10-15 with max AI (however with little stuttering).

Night lighting is generally good, although the airport seems a little dark.

Bugs: Apart from the aforementioned blurry textures in places around the airport exterior there are several places where the ground poly shows buildings but there are no 3D buildings so it looks flat and generally unrealistic. Also the airport base image could be better blended into the surrounding scenery.

Conclusion: A very good rendition of one of Spain's major international airports, although let down by the aforementioned issues. Another fine job though by Simwings, and a pleasure to fly in and out of.

Important: I am not affiliated with Aerosoft/Simwings in any way. Please direct all support issues to Aerosoft at http://forum.aerosoft.com/.
