Innsbruck Scenery
By Ryan Butterworth (6 June 2001)
Introduction
henever I'm on the Zone at
Microsoft.com I always see people doing "free flight" in one room or
another. I'm sick and tired of the usual flight in a Cessna 182 around
Meigs Field. So I decided to create a flight from somewhere in southern
Germany to Innsbruck, Austria. It's funny how people jump right into your
game room once you take the time to plan out a decent flight. If you're
like me, you love to fly in the Alps and the Rockies and any other
mountain range out there. One of my favorite European airports is
Innsbruck (LOWI), situated in the smack dab center of the Austrian Alps.
While searching through FlightSim.Com's libraries, I came across the
Innsbruck scenery created by Ricky Blanco and Neus. I thought to myself,
"Huh, haven't seen this scenery before, maybe I'll download it and check
it out." So I did. Here are my conclusions:
Layout
Since I have never been to Innsbruck, I can't say that this airport looks
exactly like the real thing. (Perhaps I can get someone who has been
there to vouch for me)! It is a nice layout in general. Private aviation
is on one side of the airport, while commercial aviation is on the other.
The thing that makes you want to fly in and stay a while is the extra
static scenery. There are only a couple of planes (not to mention
vehicles), but the planes have cargo trucks and baggage trucks nearby.
The Airport
Much better than the default. (Isn't almost every scenery add-on?)
Yellow taxi lines are included in this package. We all love those, don't
we? The tower looks great day and night. There are lamp poles around the
tower lighting the pavement. Night lighting looks decent and relaxing.
Don't worry about running into the baggage trucks, they're all
illuminated. It's the planes that you'll have to worry about. For some
reason Blanco and Neus forgot about aircraft night lighting. Oh well.
Miscellaneous Stuff
Unfortunately, my modem is only 56K. Fortunately, this package, static
aircraft and all is only about 2.9 MB. Hurrraaaahhhhh! My frames were
around 10+ FPS. I'm running on a Celeron 533 MHz, 128 MB RAM, sliders at
3/4 full, and a cheap Intel 810 chipset. So if you have anything above a
600 MHz, you should be fine. If not, you'll still be fine (unless you
don't like 10 FPS and below).
