ITVV produce a series of Flight Deck DVDs and videos covering several airlines, the majority of which are British. There are 14 in the civil series, 13 of which range from 63 - 183 minutes while the Concorde DVD is a bumper 300 minutes (five hours). The civil series also covers 11 airlines and 12 different aircraft types.
The Captain, Julian Bond, starts by introducing the flight, the route to be taken and the sights to be seen from Manchester, England (MAN) to Orlando Sanford, Florida, United States (SFB). Julian is then followed out by the cameras to show us how the walk around is conducted while some nice instrumental music by Nik Martin is played.
The cameras are then switched to those in the cockpit and the Captain and his First Officer, Mark Healey, thoroughly discuss the procedure for aborting the takeoff before V1 (decision speed) and for taking the problem into the air after V1. The SID (Standard Instrument Departure) which is to be used is checked again the FMC and the before start checklists completed. The route, pushback and taxi clearance for 'Kestrel 029' are all crystal clear as are the communications from the aircraft to the ground handlers, this gives a good insight into the ground handlers role into getting the aircraft loaded and pushed back ready for departure. The aircraft is pushed back, the engines are started and the flight controls tested. The aircraft is taxied out to the runway and lined up for takeoff. The main view for takeoff is out of the main windshield but a good feature of ITVV productions is that 5 camera views are visible during the take-off roll (one of each of the pilots, one of the cockpit and an exterior view). After takeoff the crew wastes no time in telling you about some of the various displays on the aircraft specifically the ND (Navigation Display). There a couple of quite interesting conversations between the pilots during the latter stages of the cruise about the NATS Track that they intend to take and at what level.
Oceanic clearance from Shanwick is received and the aircraft is settled into the cruise at FL350 and on NAT (North Atlantic Track) Delta. The Captain begins talking through and explaining many of the systems and displays in the Hi-tech Fly-by-Wire Airbus A330.
The Captain covers many features including:
After explaining many of the systems, Julian goes on to talk about himself and the airline, including:
After about 8 1/2 hours of flight (which is wonderfully suppressed into about 80 minutes of video) the crew discuss the descent, arrival and go-around procedures, Mark radios the handling agent at SFB and the descent is started. Again the ATC communications are crystal clear while the crew dodge numerous aircraft in the busy skies during their descent. During the final approach the TCAS even issues a descend revolutionary advisory, not common with state-of-the-art ATC!
As the crew start their visual approach to Runway 27R a similar view to that of the takeoff is shown, namely five different camera angles in one view.
After the aircraft has parked on stand and the engines shut down the Captain delivers a quick de-brief including the flight time and the amount of fuel burnt. As with all ITVV DVDs the program is finished off with a brilliant song by Nik Martin whilst highlights of the DVD are shown.
In conclusion, The Airtours A330 DVD is another brilliant release from ITVV and is a must for any aviation enthusiast or even a member of the public interested in what goes on behind the scenes.
