GroundSchool: FAA Knowledge (Written) Test Prep Software

By Nick J. Ross (10 March 2004)

It's taken a whole lot of flightsimming, years of flying on and off, and too many hours spent watching them from the ground, but I have finally decided that now is the best possible time I can be climbing into the cockpit. Yes, I've finally decided to take the plunge; or rather the bank balance has. Now is the time for buying book after book after book, equipment and all the other essentials which come with the experience.

I can't wait to get started however, and I'm happy to say that there are ways to make life easier. One of those ways is to take a good look at practise tests so you know what you're going to be up against when you sit a paper set by the FAA in the US, or CAA for the UK. One way to gain insight would be to take a look at this product: GroundSchool, from Dauntless Software.

Dauntless Software is a very small company headed up by Adrian Cybriwsky. However it can be said that its size has given it a very distinct focus and GroundSchool is a very high quality product indeed. Dauntless Software also makes SimPlates, a package of instrument approach plates specifically designe for flightsim use.

I was happy with the install which is simple and informative; the instructions also being clear on how to go about unlocking parts of the program. The program provides tests and extensive information in the following topic areas; Private Pilot; IFR; Commercial Pilot; Flight Instructor; ATP and Flight Engineer and Aviation mechanic. All of these are based on FAA regulations and tests, though I see no reason why a UK user like myself could not gain very valuable insight.

I have looked chiefly at the Private Pilots' section, though layout remains unchanged whilst the content remains at a high standard; one couldn't expect less for a package aiming to prepare the user for the types of questions he or she may face in an FAA exam.

The user is provided with one code; using this, parts of the package can be unlocked, whilst other codes are necessary for other parts of the package. This means only one program can be installed at a time, and then unlocked. In order to unlock other test banks, another CD with code must be purchased. This is explained clearly on install and in the program. Programs remaining locked are in 'demo' mode and are far less functional. The version tested was created in August last year, but its relevance is unchanged given the software is fully updatable due to the fluid nature of the tests. Updates can be made through the LiveUpdate facility, or from the Dauntless Software website.

What of the functions of the product? Well the user gets an interface where various options can be checked in order to tailor a test down to the individual's needs; the tests can range from learning mode, where answers are provided, through to study and test where there is extensive reference available and incorrect answers are explained in full; to a complete, multiple choice exam mode in your specialisation.

The background information provided is excellent and in each correct explanation for an answer, there is reference to the appropriate section in the appropriate book in which the topic appears. There are also handy hints to help you remember certain key facts.

In terms of compatibility and performance, the software clearly is not very demanding and may be run on any Windows system demonstrating excellent compatibility. An Internet connection is mandatory however for the one time unlocking of the product. Layout of each menu is fine and easy to use. There are quick configuration buttons to use in order to quickly set up a test, or the user can use advanced options to tailor the test, down to how many questions are to be asked, and the order in which answers appear. Time limits are imposed as per the real test.

As well as test banks there is also access to a reference library and links to websites of use for different aspects of your rating. Other good features include calculators to work out basic mathematics through to wind and dew point calculations; great if you're anything like me. There are also options to save and print the test, as well as getting it marked.

Overall, this is an excellent product and is a pleasure to use. Navigation is easy, and the program starts and functions well. There is a wealth of information available, and it is an interesting tool to explore. I strongly suggest adding this attractive little package to any pile of books for a more user-friendly experience.

"Don't sweat the written test. Ace it."
