Carenado Cessna C182 Skylane II RG FSX

By Dimitris Besias
28 August 2009

Long hailed as the one of the finest all-round piston aircraft in general aviation; the Cessna Skylane has power, versatility and performance to spare. Carenado offers us a great package with a variety of four different paints. They all look great and look extremely realistic with sun reflections, external shadow details as daylight indicators, antennas and probes.

The red one was my favorite one during tests since they have added scratches to the engine cover and the whole fuselage looks used and dirty. A great job.

The Carenado team took care of the eye candy by offering us seven different external viewing angles. Below you can see some of them exactly as they appear on your screen when you choose them.

The 2D and VC panels are included in this package. Since I'm a traditional 2D user, I find the provided information fully detailed. The mini panel brings all the necessary windows up in order to trim or check the aircraft. The detail of the 2D cockpit is very good and you can also choose another two options from a mini panel. A full view including light switches, etc., and a cutting edge view with only the top of the panel at the bottom of your screen.

The virtual cockpit is a masterpiece as in most Carenado aircraft. For those who like to fly using the VC, you won't have any problems with it. With some small movement, you can find everything.

There is no need to pause and turn in order to find the switch or the lever. This is a very important issue since changing your viewing angle during an approach in order to find the wheel trim can cost the whole flight. Even at night it is fully viewable with a light orange light spread around.

There are several choices of views inside the craft and you can find some very clever details which Carenado adds in order to give us the best possible realistic result. From the luxurious leather seats and door covers, to the rivets which hold the covers to be perfectly viewed and designed. In the VC you can even pull the door lever in order to open the door.

The engine sound is wonderful and is close to being 100% realistic. I find myself loving it while I was cutting the throttle for landing due to a nice deep roaring of lowering power. Gear up and down and flap sounds are very nice as well.

Flying this lady is a great experience. I tested it over the Aegean Sea at two different airports. Places with strong winds and lot of turbulence. I find the aircraft's reactions amazingly realistic and the whole behavior to not be far at all from reality.

Flying by hand will give great satisfaction and will cover the needs for challenge for a demanding virtual pilot.

The AP (autopilot) is exactly how it is in the real craft. It holds track of your path in GPS or NAV mode. You have to always keep an eye on your vertical speed and always trim the aircraft in order to keep the low nose angle for cruising. Exactly how it is in real life.

I may sound boring but the whole result could not be different from all the Carenado aircraft I have flown. The Carenado team knows very well how to design the best GA aircraft and it continues to prove it through the Skylane.

This craft gives this great feeling of satisfaction each one of us are searching for, even if you fly it manually or with the help of the AP. This pleasantly realistic and excellently designed aircraft can satisfy even the most demanding flight simmers.

For one more time, congratulations to the Carenado team and I wish to see the first two engine craft as soon as possible.

Happy flights.
