Aspen 98 Scenery
by Dan Vanevenhoven (26 August 1998)

he
scenery around Aspen Colorado in real life is nothing short of
breathtaking, and this scenery speaks for itself in those regards.

INSTALLATION
Create a sub directory ASPEN in
FLIGHT SIMULATOR\SCENERY, with additional sub directories of SCENERY and
TEXTURE in ASPEN. Copy the Aspen scenery and exclude BGLS to ASPEN\SCENERY
and copy *.R8 files to ASPEN\TEXTURE. If replacement winter textures
are to be used, again, make back-ups of the default files in \Flight Simulator\Texture
and unzip the new PRARIEW.R8 and PRAIRW_M.R8 files into that directory.
Set up as LOCAL scenery in Scenery Manager. Set up as LOCAL scenery in
Scenery Manager above the FS CD-ROM US files. Check for other Colorado
scenery that might be active.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
There are four airports included in this scenery: Aspen-Pitkin
Airport, Lake County Airport, Eagle County Regional Airport and
Glenwood Springs Municipal Airport. The designer has also included a
lot of reference information including information right out of the
IAP (instrument approach procedures) manuals including
a map for missed approach, as you don't want to hit a mountain after a missed
approach. Also included is the info from www.airnav.com
on all four airports.
REVIEW
This is a very well done scenery. The mountains have real depth and
the airports have a lot of attention to detail. For example, the
designer has even made the ILS antenna at ASE (Aspen). The designer
has even correctly modeled the special I-PKN ILS that is used for the
missed approach; don't try to land using this ILS! I did notice the
loss of scenery for the city of Aspen and the other cities.
I flew this scenery a lot and most of this area is VFR which gives
you a different perspective but that is half the fun. Mountain
flying in real life is tricky and this scenery does a very good job
of giving you that feeling. This scenery also includes a adventure
file with it. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this scenery a 6.
