Boeing 767-323 Plane & Panel

by Lee Degenstein (13 July 1998)

If Bill Gates flies the MS Flight Simulator, he should download this plane and panel. In short, the plane (by Jens Borgstroem) is great and the panel (by Eric Ernst) is even better! On the 1-10 scale the plane is a 9 and the panel is a 10 or maybe even an 11.

OVERVIEW

The Boeing 767-323 is a versatile comfortable airliner, in fact it is one of the most successful Boeing has in its fleet. American Airlines, which is the livery shown here, has a large fleet of 767's including the 200 ER and 300 ER models.

SPECIFICATIONS:
Length: 180 ft 3 in
Wing Span: 156 ft 1 in
Power Plant: 2 GE CF6-80C2B
Thrust: 60,000 LB each
Seating: 315 Passengers

PLANE INSTALLATION

Could not be easier! Even I did it on the first try. The directions are simple to understand and clearly written.

THE AIRCRAFT

The aircraft has been updated, modified, and tested by Jens Borgstroem who has worked his magic on other flight models including the Saab 340b. This is one of his finest moments. The 767 really shines in the sunlight and you won't believe how good it looks in 3D. The paint job is done well and is very accurate. There are special lighting effects at night, which make the passenger windows light up. This is a nice touch of realism. Landing lights are also included. I was a private pilot and never flew big jets, but I got a real sense of what it must be like flying this model! It should be understood that this aircraft is only a beta model. I can't wait to see the finished product. While there is always room for improvement, there is an excellent foundation to build on here.

THE PANEL

Not to take anything away from the designers of the aircraft but the panel is the really special thing here. Eric Ernst, who is a pilot for a major airline has done some of his best work on this panel. The gauges and other readouts are crystal clear and very easy to read and operate. The newest version of this panel (ver 4) has some great additions. Most noticeable is the new EADI, which was programmed by Christian Kogler. This really functions as an all in one gauge. Also included is a flight director type system. Eric gives a wonderfully simple explanation of these gauges on his web site. In fact it is more of a tutorial.

You really get a feel for what ATP pilots spend their time looking at in the cockpit, and more importantly you get a good sense of what the various gauges do. The picture here probably won't do proper justice to this panel so I recommend you check it out on Eric's site. Simply stated this is one of the best panels out there.

PANEL INSTALLATION

As seems to be the case with all of Eric Ernst's panels the installation procedure could not be easier. Follow the directions and you can't miss. Installing panels used to intimidate me. It is a pleasure to install something when the instructions are made easy to understand and are written well. One of the great things about FlightSim.Com is that you can view the file documentation before you spend time downloading. I have said it before and I'll say it again: no instructions = no download. Poorly written, unclear or incorrect instructions = the same thing. The good news is that the majority of panel developers, especially Mr. Ernst understand this. You'll have no problems installing this panel.

CONCLUSION

If you like to fly the big jets you'll love the 767-323. Between the accurate flight model and the outstanding panel you'll wonder as I did why Microsoft doesn't hire people like Eric Ernst and Jens Bordstroem as consultants. They certainly have done a better job than the people at Microsoft did when they developed some of the aircraft for FS98 and it's predecessors. Download this package then tell your friends and neighbors, they'll thank you for it. Speaking of thanks; thanks to Eric and Jens and their team for a job well done.
