Scenery Here, There And ALMOST Everywhere...

By FlightSim.Com Staff

Why not us? With the recent announcement of Wilco's Airport 2000 Volume 3, I have concluded when scenery designers set out to do their thing, they usually don't include the good ol' USA, the birthplace of flightsimming. Why is this?

It could be that most scenery design houses are located in Europe. Well, that's fine. Nothing against them. In fact, if it weren't for Apollo's famous Europe I, II and III sceneries for FS5 and FS98, I would not have some great memories of those "good ol' days".

However, we have come a long way since then, and still, there has never been an entire USA scenery set completed by a commercial developer. I know, I know, the USA is a lot bigger than Italy, or Germany or Great Britain. But why can't someone out there give us the same quality we've been seeing in European sceneries, for the US? Lately, there have been plenty of new, European-based sceneries announced. I don't need to list them here, they're easy to find. But, yet the most we get are a few US cities here and there, included in something like Wilco's latest. Other than that, no one, has done any USA scenery to be sold in stores!

How long will this continue? I am getting almost mad that there seems to be no end in sight on the European front. Again, European sceneries are great, as is Europe. I always go there a few times a year in FS. But those who fly in the USA just have to explore the default scenery or take many hours installing freeware add-on areas, piece by piece by piece.

Come'on commercial designers out there - get on the ball! Give us an entire USA scenery. Not one with every city's airport detailed right down to the docking gates and baggage carts in motion, but rather a basic detail enhancement to go along with the default US scenery. Some new buildings, passenger terminals etc. Just do what you're doing in Europe for us over here! I really love taxiway signs.

Now, those of you who know me, know that I have raved in the past about poor frame rates in scenery packages. And yes, I still would do just that, if a scenery is over-done. Am I asking too much? Just to get even with me, would you do up a grand style scenery for about 50 US cities, only to be un-flyable?

I worry that could come true.

Maybe I should stick to the default scenery. Even I succumb to the tantalizing screen shots our European friends display proudly. Cities like London, Rome, Amsterdam or Frankfurt and many more in between.

So I ask someone out there, some bigwig scenery design studio out there, why not the USA?
