How To...Use Roger Wilco MK.Id2

By Harold Crowell

Roger Wilco has been around for a few years now and is probably THE voice communication program for flight simulator users worldwide. The original version of Roger Wilco (and I am not sure what the version number is) worked pretty well flawlessly - of course depending upon the individual's computer and hardware.

A new version of Roger Wilco has been released and its version number is MK.Id2. As a frequent multiplayer, I first noted that if hosting a session, those pilots trying to contact me would receive a message "User is using Roger Wilco but is not currently hosting a session". Well, to make a long story short, I knew better than that because I certainly WAS hosting a session. My first thoughts were that I was an unregistered user and maybe that feature was reserved for registered users. An email to GameSpy (Roger Wilco) soon proved that I was wrong and i was pointed to their known issues page, which clarified this matter. Here is what it says - and I quote (with somewhat of a red face):

Channelname?

"I keep getting 'The host you entered is running Roger Wilco but is not currently hosting a channel' when I type in my buddy's IP address."

"This is a result of not entering the host IP and the channel name when you try to join. Be sure you specify both in this format: "123.456.789.234/channelname"

The channelname of course is whatever you wish to make it but others wanting to connect MUST know what it is. Those that are posting flights on flightboards and on The Zone should be certain that this info is posted in such a way that all pilots wishing to join the flight will be able to do so.

Finally

I thought it was my duty as an FS pilot to point this out to other pilots. I hope that those of you that are not at all unlike myself (who did not read this part of the known issues) will now be able to use Roger Wilco both in regular mode AND in Base Station mode without any further problems.
