Flap's Flap 5 - A New Way To Enjoy Flight Simulator: Online!

By John J. Thuot II (4 February 2005)

Hello everyone, I'm back with February's edition of Flap's Flap, here to offer you a new way to enhance your Flight Simulation experience, with online multiplayer flights. I have been wanting to try online flying for a little while over the past years, and finally got to do it with Flight Simulator 2004 and the Multiplayer Adventure Forum group here at FlightSim.Com, and let me tell you it is a blast.

I have tried before on my old system frustratingly to connect to Vatsim.net to be able to fly under their air traffic control, without success even to this date. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong over there, and if any of you folks are able to assist me in that matter, I would be truly grateful to broaden my online multiplayer experience even more so since I heard flying with Vatsim is so much more life like and makes the Flight Simulator world even one step closer to "As Real As It gets" with ATC guiding you along on your virtual journey.

Let me tell you though, there have been times on the Multiplayer Adventure flights that we needed ATC, and one of their own provide the services for us, and it is truly an enjoyable experience with it. I have participated in a few of the events, which ranged anywhere from a fly-in to Nassau Airport in the Bahamas and a boat race, which was my very first event I attended, and let me tell you, some of the anomolies that occur in the online flight simulation world are truly humorous, we still had a blast with the event. That one had a good turn out, and as you can see from the screen shot below, we had a good time:

The next event that we had was a trip up to Juneau Valley airport. Designed by one of our very own team members, Geoff. The team then had a Concorde Anniversary flight which took the short hop across the pond along the same path as the Concorde (I regretfully missread the time for departure on that one). We then had a mid-air refueling competition (which I regret I was not able to participate in due to some technical connectivity problems) and afterwards, I was able to participate in the latest event, a Mount McKinley adventure in Alaska, where we took off from Juneau Valley, and then proceeded to a custom made scenery, Sheldon's Cabin:

The second half of the event had us landing as close to the peak as possible on Mount McKinley. It was really an enjoyable journey, though I could not attend the second half due to personal family reasons.

My system settings for Flight Simulator 2004.
Performance on computer systems will vary so please don’t email me about my FPS too slow if I mention them on mine. Computer system for this article and all others of Flap’s Flap is the following:

  • Dell Dimension 4600
  • 2.66 GHz Pentium 4 Processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 128MB Nvidia GeforceFX 5200 AGP 8X Graphic Card
  • 19" Flat Screen Monitor
  • Altec Lansing Surround Sound Speakers
  • Go-Flight Cockpit Control System
  • Saitek X36F Flight Controller and X35T (Throttle)
What I'm basically trying to say here with this month's article, is if you are wondering about online flying try it with this group - you won't be disappointed in the time you have. There is something about doing these events online that show you how much of a loyal following flight simultion has - we have members from England and Australia fly around with us, and it makes you realise just how big this little planet of ours really is.

As I said before in the beginning, if anyone out there is willing to help me connect to Vatsim, I'm ready to take the next step in virtual aviation and going that direction. I'd really like to enjoy it someday. Thanks for coming along this month fellow Flight Simmers, and look forward to seeing you all here next month for Flap's Flap #6 - combining real world aviation activities with flight simulator. Until then, keep the blue side up, and happy flying, and I'll see all of you guys in the next multiplayer adventure!
