The Simulation Lover's Holiday Shopping Guide

By John J. Thuot II (30 November 2004)

Hello everyone, I'm back, this time focusing on one of my favorite times of year, the holidays! This article by the way isn't meant to be enjoyed by us - we all ready know where to get the oodles of products out there for flightsim fans - I'm talking about our significant others - your folks, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends - gather them around the glow of the monitor to read up on where to get us some of drooled over gift ideas that we have been wanting all year long and strived to be good to be able to get them.

eDimensional TrackIR Okay, everyone here? Let's get started. I'll point you towards some of the more interesting items out there today on the flightsim market.

There are many types of add-ons available today, as I'm sure you've heard being discussed throughout the year. There's hardware, not just for the computer, but specifically for flight simulation like yokes and rudder pedals. These can be purchased directly from manufacturers, like CH Products, or from stores such as Flightsim Central or PC Aviator. GoFlight, which makes excellent and easy to use programmable flight controls--now your flightsim fan can actually push real buttons and turn real knobs! I have personal experience with GoFlight, and they are high quality stuff. For another different kind of hardware, how about eDimensional? They make 3D gaming glasses, where you will be able to immerse yourself in your flightsim world and make it even more "As Real As It Gets". Want a really unique flightsim item? How does looking around the virtual cockpit of your favorite plane sound--without using a hat switch? Well you can with eDimmensional's TrackIR.

For aircraft lovers - numerous companies make aircraft available in the download market. Note that I do say download market. Some are now available in boxed versions as well - but if you heard someone talking about Eaglesoft Development Group's Citation Series, those are only available on download format - so you may have to get a little bit creative in handing out those gifts. Flight1 Software also makes excellent aircraft models, many now available by CD as well, so you don't have to worry about how to present them. Abacus is also another maker of aircraft and utillities, such as their EZ Landmark, one of my personal favorites. You'll want to watch FlightSim.Com's main pages - they change all the time with different advertisers. It depends upon your aircraft lover's taste for what they want. Military? Civilian? It's all there. Some companies are creative such as Perfect Flight, who make aircraft before they are released, an example being their Airbus A380. FSD International is also another manufacturer of high quality aircraft for Flight Simulator. Although I have none myself, their work looks truly amazing.

Scenery - there are also numerous scenery developers out there - Aerosoft has made some fascinating VFR flyable sceneries which by the way for you folks is Visual Flight Rules. Also Simflyers makes some nice airport scenery, which is also available on CD form in a package called World Airports and World Airports 2 through some vendors. For traffic, (I'm not sure if that's really a scenery, but I guess it fits) Flight1, the maker of many excellent aircraft products makes a nice utility called Ultimate Traffic, that will populate your enthusiasts skies with real airlines. So, instead of hearing airlines like Soar or Landmark now you'll hear stuff like Southwest, American, etc. being broadcast into your ears as you fly along your virtual journey.

Utilities: There are also many manufacturers of utilities out there as well. Some add enhancement to our flight simulator like voice sets and audible check lists, whereas others help install third party downloadable software. My best bet for you is to again, go to sites such as the FlightSim.Com Pilot Shop and Flight1.com. You can search through the menu functions to find what you are looking for.

I guess what I'm basically trying to say is, if you listen to your flightsim fan through the year, we've told you what we like and wish to get for the holidays. If you've listened - you know where to go and get them. But if not, I hope that this little blurb this time around has helped you out and at least point you in the right directions.

I'd like to say Happy Holidays to all my fellow flightsimmers out there - and still be good...there is time to wind up on the "bad" list this year with Santa...Don't say I didn't warn yah!

Happy flying and keep the blue side up, and be good for goodness sake!
